3. These are called Phrasal verbs
There are verbs that appear constantly in English,
especially in informal contexts.
They are made up of a VERB + A PARTICLE
or, sometimes, TWO PARTICLES
The PARTICLE usually changes the
meaning of the verb

5. Let’s see these two examples:
I called Jen to see how she was. (call = to telephone)
They've called off the meeting. (call off = to cancel)

6. Following the word order,
there are two types of Phrasal
verbs:
SEPARABLE INSEPARABLE

7. SEPARABLE
In this case, the verb and particle
can be apart or together
They’ve called the meeting off
They’ve called off the meeting
However, separable phrasal verbs must be
separated when you use a pronoun.
The meeting? They've called it off.

8. He didn’t want to call the wedding off.
Can you throw these things away? ( Throw away = waste)
Some examples of Separable Phrasal verbs
He turned my offer down ( Turn down = decline)
She made the story up ( Make up= invent)
Can you pick me up ?( Pick up= to collect someone )
Can you wake me up at 10?(Wake up= to stop sleeping)

cannot be separated

When is a pronoun, the verb and particle
remain together.

10. I take after my mom (Take after: similar)
It came back yesterday ( Came back= returned)
Some common non-separable phrasal verbs:
It is time to get off the train ( Get off = leave)
Let’s find out ( Find out = discover)
Don’t give up! (Give up= surrender)
Hold up the entrance,there is too much people
( Hold up= delay)

There are also Inseparable
Phrasal verbs with two particles
With two
particles
Even if you use a pronoun, you put it after the
particles.
I don’t feel up to going out tonight.
(Feel up to = to feel capable to do something)
I can’t get on with my dad.
(Get on with = to have a good relationship)
She’s coming forward with the solution.
(Come forward with = to give ideas or
information)
Watch out for possible robberies at night.
(Watch out for = be careful because of a
danger.)
