3. What is a Trade Union ?
• Trade unions are voluntary organizations of employees or employers
formed to promote and protect their interests through collective action.

• Trade union is a monopolistic combination of wage earners whose
purpose is to strengthen their power to bargain with the employers

Started in 19th century in Great Britain and USA.
British favoured Political activism.
USA favored collective bargaining
as a means of winning economic
gains for their workers.
7. History in India
The trade union movement in India can be distinctively studied through
three phases
• 1st phase = Before World War I
• 2nd phase = Before Independence
• 3rd phase = Post Independence
8. • N.M. Lokhande, organized a labor convention in
Bombay in 1884
• The outcome of this was that on April 21, 1890,
10,000 workers gathered in Bombay for a mass
gathering
• Twenty-four strikes occurred between 1882 and 1890
in Bombay and Madras

• The registered Trade union is a corporate
body
• It enjoys immunity from criminal
conspiracies with Trade disputes
• Right to amalgamate to form a larger union

10. Nokia Siemens Networks
• Workers went on strike on 13th Aug 2009, after announcement of new
salary hike of Rs 200 per month.
• Strike effectively continued for only 2 days but the production of
300,000 handsets was affected.
• Management agreed to meet their demands and offers a pay hike of
1500 per month.
