DRILLING DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
6. Was the team leader from the drilling department with in the overall
multi disciplinary team consisting of Geologists, Geophysists,
Reservoir engineers, Facilities engineers for the planning for the
development of 6 fields in the block which have a potential to
produce 175,000 bopd. The plan was to drill approximately 350 wells
over a period of 6-8 years from +/- 32 well pads. Reported to
Drilling Manager and Drilling Engineering Manager for this task.
• Field development plans (FDP) : Prepared drilling part of the
field development plans (FDP) for 4 areas namely Mangala,
Saraswati, Ragheswai and Aishwarya in the remote desert area of
Rajasthan. The following are the main tasks in this
o Prepared and finalised the draft directional plans for the
pad wells.
o Worked in conjunction with a third party consultant, Tech-21,
for optimising the profile so as to the limit the TD / angle,
keeping the well objectives intact and to derive drilling
cost economy.
o Well engineering for these development wells with an eye on
drilling economy. Techniques considered and proposed for this
are
Unitised wellheads to limit non drilling time
Casing while drilling for the surface loss areas,
Using Rotary steerable systems for the ERD and Horizontal
wells.
Proposed and finalised contract for highly mobile pad rigs
for efficient drilling and limiting the rig move time
between slots / pads.
Using SBM mud
Using of application specific high performance PDC bits
Rotating the rig services between the rigs.
• Proposed drilling of the hole for the conductor and
lowering of conductor offline from drilling the rig time by
using the percussion type drilling rig for this purpose.
(Cost saved approx USD 26,000 per well).
• Prepared time estimates for the wells to be drilled from
each pad and consolidate it for the development campaign -
pad-wise and field wise.
• Prepared level-3 cost estimate for the development wells -
well wise, pad wise and field wise.
• Prepared Budget for the development campaign based on the
above - year wise, field wise and target-wise.
• Well Pad Design: 32 well pads are planned for the drilling
of +/- 350 wells. With the Civil team, planned and Surveyed
all the pads, and shifted based on the trajectory generated &
in discussion with the sub surface and development geology
team to finalise the location. Soil boring and other tests
were done and well pad design was finalised in consultation
with the third party consultants Mustang Engineering, Houston
and the projects team to optimes the site layout as well as
the facility layout.
• Basis of well Design (BOWD) : The wells for the development
campaign consisted of verticals, directional (0-45 deg.),
7. Horizontal and ERD wells, water wells, injectors etc. I was
the team leader from drilling in the overall
multidisciplinary team, to prepare and approve the BOWD for
each of the category of wells.
Technology proposed for use.
I have experience in the following technologies, which are in use in
Rajasthan desert Drilling Campaign.
• Casing while drilling.
• Rotary steerable systems (Auto Track) in ERD and High angle
wells.
• Drilling wells with MWDs, LWDs (with Nukes) and logging with
TLC / tractors.
• Using SBM, K2SO4 (Top section only) mud and Carbocore for the
low invasive coring.
• Use of turbines, Xtreme motors and impreg bits in the hard and
abrasive volcanics / weathered basement.
