Selecting the best water flow meter depends on the application; different flow meters perform better when measuring various things. You can discover more by watching videos, reading blogs, and using various digital tools. This will help you to narrow down your search for the ideal flowmeter for your liquid and water flow applications.

What is Flow Meter?
• Water flow meter is a meter used to measure the amount of water flowing through a
pipe or an open channel.
• There are various types of water flow meter technologies which depend on the
application of water being measured, the required level of maintenance, and the
available budget.
• These water flow meter types have a different operating principles which offer
advantages for a particular application, and have an overall cost of ownership.

Types Of Water Flow Meters
There are four important types of water flow meters for closed pipe
application-
1- Ultrasonic Flow Meters
2- Magnetic Flow Meters
3- Vortex Flow Meters
4- Mechanical Flow Meters

1- Ultrasonic Flow Meter
• Transit type Ultrasonic flow meter is one of the popular type
of Ultrasonic flow meters.
• It works on transit time principle.
• It uses ultrasound to gauge a fluid velocity as it travels
through a pipe in order to calculate volumetric flow.
• The transit time meter is used for clear liquids or liquids
having very low levels of undissolved solids.
• Clamp-on ultrasonic meters is another type, that is used for a
wide range of applications and are particularly suitable for
measuring water flow in big pipes.

2- Magnetic Flow Meter
• Electromagnetic Flow Meter is widely used for flow
measurement of conducting fluids.
• Applications include drinking water as well as wastewater
applications, These are typically used for any dirty liquids
which are conductive or water-based, raw water, etc
• The sensor works on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic
Induction.
• Because of its unique feature of having full bore flow, the
meter does not obstruct the flow of the liquid being
measured

3- Vortex Flow Meter
• These are water flow meters that utilise vortices, by
using a sensor submerged in the flow.
• Each vortex that passes through a vortex meter causes
a sensor tab to flex, which results in a frequency output
that is inversely proportional to the volumetric flow rate.
• Only issue with these meters is, recalibration is
expensive and time consuming.
• Therefore, other types of flow meters like differential
pressure flow meters are many times preferred by
users.

4- Mechanical/Turbine Flow Meter
• Mechanical flow meters use a system of moving parts
to physically measure flow.
• The fluid travels either through a spinning turbine or
rotor (positive displacement, or PD) or a set of gears
or chambers.
• Water, fuels, viscous fluids, and other liquid flow rates
are conveniently monitored with mechanical flow
meters

Conclusion
• Selecting the best water flow meter depends on the application.
• Different flow meters perform better when measuring various different things.
• Manas Microsystems, an Indian manufacturer of Electromagnetic Flowmeters
and Ultrasonic Flowmeters (including clamp-on & insertion type ultrasonic
flowmeters), is a leading supplier of variety of Flowmeters in India.
• These flowmeters work under variety of flow, temperature, fluid quality and
line pressure conditions of liquids or gases.
Disclaimer : There are many other types of flowmeters, but in this presentation, we have mainly focussed on some
of the popular ones
