Soil is the loose material covering the earth surface.It is the upper layer
of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically
consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay and rock particles.

4. There are three types of soil which are :
Clay soil
Loam soil
Sand soil

5. Clay soil is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay material .Clay develop plasticity
when wet, due to a molecular film of water surrounding the clay particles but become hard, brittle and
non-plastic upon drying or firing.[Wikipedia]

6. Characteristics of clay soil
-Small particle size- clay soils have small particle.
-Affinity for water . According to the USGS, Clay minerals all have a great
affinity for water.
-fertility-It retains most of nutrients very well because of its negative charge and
high surface area.
-It is mainly used for modeling here in Lesotho.
-It is white or light-colored but it can show a variety of colors from impurities
such as reddish or brownish color from small amount of irons oxide.

7. Sand soil is light, warm, dry and tends to be acid and low in nutrients. Sandy soil are often known as
light soil due to their high proportion of sand and little clay .It has quick water drainage and are easy to
work with. It is light brown in color.

8. Uses of sand soil
 Agricultural need
 Easy drainage
 Contraction
 Foundation
 Changing PH
 It is commonly found in landscapes and here in Lesotho is found in the river.

9. Loam soil is a soil made with a balance of the three main types of soil: sand ,silt and clay soil.
Loams are more common than any other kinds of soil.

10. Features of loam soil
 It is considered to be the best to grow plants.
 It is not excessively hard or sticky but has good drainage.
 The best loam soils are often found in valleys floodplains and law-lying areas
near lakes and river.
 Most loam soils are a brown or black color, making them ideal for gardens.
