2. SAYING NO AND TURNING
DOWN A JOB
Learned to say” No”
Listened to my gut
Turned down position
Kept personal and professional ideals
and integrity
3. COMMITTED AND STUBBORN
Committed to finding THE solution
Stubborn enough to not quit until it’s done
Committed to finding right answer, person, or
project to fill the need
Stubborn enough to not care who has the right
answer, it doesn’t have to be my idea
I’m not the answer; I’m one of the tools to find
the answer
4. A BUSINESS COMMUNITY THAT
BELIEVES IT CAN HELP TO MAKE
THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE
Not tools to be used
Partners

5. PERSONAL MISSION
STATEMENT
Do Better…
That is my goal in life, my mission. To be a better Malissa than I
was yesterday. To be a better mom to Ronan than yesterday.
Each person’s life I touch I want to bring better to it, each
position I work I want to bring better to that business. I want to
bring better to the world I live. My hope is that when I pass
from this realm that someone says about me that I brought
better to the world.
Editor's Notes
The most important piece of work experience you've had that will help you to do this job well.
Years ago I was past the third interview for a position with a company I believed I would be a great fit with. The last interview with the partners was set up for a few days later and I had a great feeling about it, when I was traveling out of town and received a call from the recruiter. She asked me if I could be at their office in 45 minutes to meet with the partners. I said that I could not meet with any one that day and that I already had a meeting scheduled. She told me that they decided to move the interviews up since the partners were able to come in town early and that if I couldn’t meet them in 45 minutes could I meet them in a couple of hours. She kind of whispered that if I couldn’t meet them today that they would move on because they wanted people that would be able to drop everything to get their work done.
I knew then that this was not the kind of company I wanted to work for and I learned to say no. I told the recruiter “No, thank you, I would pass on the position as I did not believe we would be a fit for each other.” It was not easy and I felt very uncomfortable, almost like I had lost out on something. But, I knew deep down I made the right decision and less than six months later the company was looking to fill the same position again.
It may not be easy to say no or turn someone down, but being uncomfortable with how a person or company conducts business is not a feeling I’m willing to live with daily. And this has served me well in business and personally, as there are times when no matter how uncomfortable I am, I must be able to say no or I risk my personal and professional integrity.
2. The personality trait that will best support you in succeeding with us.
When I decide to do something I become very committed and stubborn and these are two of my personality traits that serve me best in business and will make me successful at Firepole. I do not mean that I dig in my feet and refuse to make changes, what I do mean is that I decide that I will get done what ever needs to be done and will find the way that makes me or the project succeed. I am about finding a way, trying until something works, listening to others suggestions, and just not giving up until the job is done.
If the original idea can’t succeed for any reason, I don’t give up and quit, I reorganize, or revamp the idea or project or look for a project to replace the one that was needed or find a person who can help me find the right idea. I focus on making sure the needs get filled, If one way isn’t right, I’m committed enough to recognize that I need to move to another answer and stubborn enough to not give up until I find the right answer or person.
3. What about our organization most resonates with you as a place you want to work.
If I can work with a business that believes that its clients and employees are not just tools to be used as a way to make money, but as partners; partners that help make positive change to each other and the world, I would consider it an honor. This resonates with me on a very personal and spiritual level because this is part of my personal mission as a human being. I believe that we spend so much time at work and interacting with our teammates that it only makes sense to love where you work, those with whom you work, and the core goals and philosophy of the company itself. I want to be proud of the company I am associated with and not ashamed to tell people where I work. With all I’ve read and viewed on Firepole’s website and about the company I believe this is what it is doing.
