The Power of Change
Twelve years ago my parents started a telemarketing company, that eventually
grew to be in twenty-eight different countries, causing them to travel an enormous
amount. Twelve years ago, I was six years old; growing up I have always had to learn to
be independent, since my parents were gone so often. I believe that this has made me a
better employee for a few reasons; First, I had to adapt to new situations and
environments all the time. Second, I’ve never had a super solid friend base, therefore I
had to get used to stepping out of my comfort zone and I have learned and seen all
different personality types. Last, I have seen what it takes to work as a team, and the
benefits and outcomes of working hard and staying motivated. The experiences that I
have had growing up has benefited me in a lot of ways, and sets me apart from other
employees. I have experienced a lot that other people my age have not, making me more
well rounded and experienced in the work-place.
To give you a little bit of a back story, I have moved around so much throughout
my life that in middle school, unlike other students who go to the same school for three
years, I went to a different school every year for all three years of middle school. Then
after that, in high school I was at three different schools for my first three years as well.
Luckily, I was able to stay at the same school for my junior and senior year. At the time,
moving schools was extremely difficult for me, but I believe the trials I went through
prepared me for trials to come as I have had to adapt to new situations. When you’re
preparing for an interview for a job, or you’re working with a company, you never know
what could happen everyday, and some people aren’t comfortable with the unknown.
Moving around so often has helped me see different cultures and types of people, and I

have become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Every year that I was at a new
school, was like walking into a new opportunity and adventure on that first day. I never
knew if I was going to love it or hate it, but I always decided that it was up to me to make
it a good experience and have a positive attitude. When I moved for the third time in high
school, I was moving from a small performing arts school that consisted of 125 students
total, to a public high school that had around 4,000 students total. That difference alone
was always hard for me. I had to adjust to the new leanring enviornment, fast pace
teaching styles, the cliques with other students and more. Like I said, every year was a
completely different experience; but now I feel like I can make any job incredible
because I know that our mindset and attitude can determine whether or something is
going to be amazing or terrible.
Moving schools also meant new friends for me. This was difficult because not
only did I have to be outgoing and put myself out there to meet new friends, but I also
had to get to know each one and adjust to their personality types. I think with every job
this is a key factor to being a great employee. For example, if you are working a retail job
and you have to find a girl an outfit, the best thing to do is build a relationship with that
customer, so they will trust you to pick an outfit for them. You also need to determine
their style, so you’re able to pick an outfit that they will fall in love with; this is hard to
do since you’ve never met this person. I believe that I have been able to develop this
skill, and I can comfortably build relationships with people fast, since I have so much
experience with it. At the time having to make new friends did not seem like a blessing,
but looking back, I am glad I had the experiences that I did so I can apply those skills to
my life today.

The last thing that I learned, in my opinion was probably the most important, and
most impactful in my life today. I was able to learn the value and importance of hard
work. I have seen my parents sacrifice everything we had to provide an amazing life for
my siblings and I. We have been so fortunate with their company, but it would not have
been possible if my parents didn’t go out of town and work non stop to make their
company explode. I have developed a motivation and desire to have a life like my
parents, where I don’t have to work any more. I know what it takes to get the job done,
and I won’t stop till my goals are accomplished. My parents have taught me this ever
since I was born. When I was going through a hard time in my life, I would read success
books to motivate me, and help me to understand why my parents were going and doing
what they were doing. I know that if I hadnt seen them working so hard and we hadn’t
moved so much, I would not have the understanding or appreciation for large companies
and business owners. I believe that the knowledge I have of expanding our own company,
will benefit other companies if I am their employee.
All of the trials and tribulations I have gone through, and the change that I have
experienced has formed me into becoming the person I am today. Learning
communication, people skills, hard work, and the importance of a positive attitude has
helped me to apply these things to my jobs currently. I know these experiences will
benefit me long term. All in all, I am grateful for the setbacks I have had and hope to
develop more skills that will benefit me in years to come, and I also hope to be able to
have the opportunity to help others develop these skills as well, as I feel they are
extremely beneficial in anyones life.
