2. BAROQUE
The term baroque once had negative
meaning.
The name derived from baroque
pearls [pearls with unusual and odd
shapes]
Compared to renaissance art , it was
considered to be "over dramatic" and
the architecture "over decorated"
3. INTRODUCTION
• The baroque was first introduced in 1600 in Italy , and
after that was spread across Europe.
• In a style that used exaggerated movements ,
expression and gestures drama ,tension and grandeur
in sculpture ,literature , dance , painting and music.
• Baroque design is the symbol of power.
• Baroque style spread throughout Europe
,Italy ,holland , France and Spain.
4. INFLUENCE TOWARDS BAROQUE
• Roman catholic church supported baroque art style in
response to the protestant reformation [movement reform
catholic church ] communication of religious themes with
viewers direct and emotional involvement.
• Aristocracy adopted baroque style to impress visitors and to
express triumphant power and control.

6. Elements of
design
•Characterized as dramatic ,
opulent , and luxurious with rich
colours , designed furniture ,
gilded and ornamental
accessories and high end
textiles.
7. Furniture is intricately detailed to accent embellishment with
curved legs, carved details and gilding.
Golds frames and gilding on statues and pottery and common.
9. Luxury fabrics in damask and floral
prints are used for upholstery , wall
coverings , and floor to ceiling
window coverings.
Hand woven rugs are placed to
soften spaces.
10. CHARACTERSTICS
• FOLIAGE MOTIFS
• A profusion of plant life
characterizes that baroque
style. scrolling foliage and
garlands of flower decorate
many objects.
11. MARQUETRY
• Marquetry is laying of veneers of
different – coloured woods into
the surface of furniture. This
novel form of decoration was
learned from french and dutch
cabinet –makers.
12. CRESTS AND INITIALS
• The decorative use of
monograms , usually peoples
initials was a particular feature
of the baroque style. Heraldic
crests were also
incorporporated into designs as
symbol of status and
ownership.
13. PUTTI
• The italian word putti means boy
is the name given to chubby
child figure , often with wings ,
frequently appearing in both
mythological and religious
painting and sculpture.
14. LAMBREQUIN
MOTIF
• Baroque interiors were enriched with
luxurious textiles.
• The distinctive featres of these fabrics
were trnasformed into motifs to be
used in other media. The lambrequin ,
or tasseled cloths, motif is one of the
most common.
15. FURNITURE IN BAROQUE
• Started in 17th century
• Architects : Gianlorenzo Bernini
and francesco borromini.
• Big and elaborate pieces of
furniture are the characteristics
of baroque interior design.
• The golden colour is most typical
for this style.
16. CARYATIDS
• CARYATIDS and the scroll
patterns were introduced using
the caryatid and scroll patterns
in baroque designs means the
use of female figure along with
scrolled shaped and spiral
turned leg to support the
structure of the furniture.
17. WARDROBS
• Baroque architecture had been
transformed to structures with
curved fronts and was first used
on wardrobed and chests of
drawer.
