2. A source of energy is that which is capable of
providing enough useful energy at a steady rate
3. An ideal source
of energy should
be :
Safe and
convenient
to use
Easy to
transport
Easy to
store
4.
5. Fossil fuels are the remains of prehistoric pants and
animals which got buried deep inside the Earth millions of
years ago due to some natural processes.
The energy of fossil fuels is ,in fact, that solar energy
which was trapped by natural processes a very long
time ago.
Coal, petroleum and natural gas are fossil fuels and a
major portion of our energy demands is being met
by these fuels. We shall now describe these fuels. We
shall now describe these fossil fuels briefly.
6.
7.
8. It is the most abundant fossil fuel on the Earth. It is
essentially carbon and is mainly used as combustion
fuel.
The large scale us of coal began with the industrial
revolution in the 19th century. Coal provides 27%of the
world’s energy.

10.
11.
12. There are three
varieties of coal :
• Lignite(28%-30%
carbon)
• Bituminous(78%-
87% carbon)
• Anthracite(94%-
98% carbon)
13.
14. Coal mining in India dates
back to 18th century.
India has about 7% of
World’s known coal
reserves and these are
mainly found in Bihar,
West Bengal, Orissa and
Madhya Pradesh.
Coal supplies 50% of the
Country’s total energy
requirement. By current
estimates, the reserves are
sufficient to meet the
Country’s demand for at
least another 100 years.

21. 1) It is a Complete fuel and can be used directly for
house hold and industrial purposes.
2) Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel.
Because the combustion process for natural gas is
almost perfect, very few byproducts are emitted
into the atmosphere as pollutants.
3) Natural gas is convenient. The energy source is
piped directly to the customer's facility through the
safe, efficient pipeline system. There's no need to
store oil on site in tanks, or schedule oil deliveries.
22. 1) It is used as a domestic and industrial fuel.
2) It is used as a fuel in thermal power plants to
generate electricity
3) It has been a source of hydrogen in the
manufacture of fertilizers.
4) It is as transport fuel as it is less polluting
