3. CSIR − Central Food Technological
Research Institute(CFTRI), Mysore
(A constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New
Delhi) came into existence during 1950 with the great vision of its founders, and a
network of inspiring as well as dedicated scientists who had a fascination to pursue
in-depth research and development in the areas of food science and technology.
4. The Central Library at CFTRI made a small beginning in 1950 and in order to meet
the emerging needs, a well organised information system devoted completely to Food
Science and Technology was conceived on a small scale as early as 1966 which later came to be
known as Food Science and Technology Information Service (FOSTIS). The Library
provides its services to scientists, researchers, staff, students, resource centres and retired staff of
institute, faculty of universities, staff of industries and research fellows on conditional
membership to utilize its services.
5. INFORMATION SERVICES:
The library is central hub of knowledge and information has always been in the forefront in
developing infrastructure in tune with the advances in the Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT).

7. Electronic Journals:
The CFTRI Library, which entered into a digital era way back in 1985, provides access
to full-text of around 4000 Electronic Journals as a part of the CSIR Network from major
International Publishers viz., Springer, Blackwell Publishing, Taylor & Francis,
John Wiley, Emerald, Oxford University Press and IEEE Xplore; access to
Indian Standards (BIS) and ASTM Standards; access to citation databases and full text of
world's top patent databases. The library has migrated 50% of print journals of
international publishers to online from the year 2013.
8. On-line Public Access Catalog (OPAC):
The library operations have been automated using open source software Open
Biblio and customized to our requirement. The On-line Public Access Catalog (OPAC)
which contains bibliographic records of all library holdings is accessible on intranet at
http://192.168.0.132 and on internet at http://www.cftri.com/e-bulletin.html
Current Awareness Service (Library e-Bulletin):
It covers a brief description of the activities at FOSTIS such as News briefs, latest
additions of books, serial publications, CD-ROM databases, project investigations,
dissertations and theses and Internet resources of interest to the users. The bulletin is
published in electronic form and can be accessed at the institute's website (www.cftri.com)
9. Blog announcement regarding access to e-Journals, books received on approval basis and
new additions to library.
Document Delivery Service:
Through this service, we provide photocopy of articles required by the user from the
library of print holdings only for R&D purposes, on payment of a fee.
10. Institutional Repository:
The Institutional Repository (IR) of CFTRI collects preserves and
disseminates in digital format the research output of the CFTRI community. It
enables the CFTRI community to deposit their preprints, postprints and other
publications using a web interface and organizes these publications for easy
retrieval. In addition to this, it also contains theses/dissertation/student
investigations carried out at CFTRI. It may be accessed at http://ir.cftri.com and
the repository holds 7762 documents.
11. FACILITIES
MEMBERSHIP FACILITY:
The library which is serving the information needs of its own institute faculty covering
Scientists, Research Fellows, PhD scholars, Projects Assistants and staff and students. Institute
users may enroll themselves as library member on production of the appointment order,/OM,
fellowship letter of approval and two photos along with the filled in membership form.
This facility is extended to retired staff of CFTRI.

12. The external members are eligible for membership on payment of annual fee.
Several categories of memberships such as Academic, Corporate and Individual,
are available for university and college faculty, government organizations,
entrepreneurs, consultants and small, medium and large-scale industries

Academic : Rs.250/- annual (per person)
Corporate : Rs.15,000/- annual (5 persons) (REFERENCE USE ONLY)
Corporate Individual : Rs. 3000/- annual
Researchers and P.G students working in the area of food science and technology coming for
reference from other universities/institutions are permitted to use library on working days Mon-Fri
for 3-4 days on prior request from his/her institution. Any such user who would like to use the
library frequently has to take annual library membership.
14. Conclusion
The library provides different kinds of services to its users for fulfilment of their document and
information need.
The membership fees is not too high, it gives access to students on request
basis
The subscription of different kinds of standard databases, and giving full text
access makes it almost self sufficient in content in the field of study.
