This project provides opportunities for the student to learn new creative and technical skills. Specifically, the student will learn how to design packaging for an energy drink, requiring knowledge of gaining attention from a target market. Technically, the student will develop skills using Photoshop CS6, such as effects like skew, stroke, and curves. The student will also have to take and edit their own photos if stock images are unavailable. The skills learned could be useful for jobs in photography, web design, and other roles requiring image editing. The project will give experience designing for different media like web banners, and the student is most interested in web banners as they require attention-grabbing design within simplicity for the target market.
1. Opportunities
Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to
consider the opportunities this project has to help you improve your skills, knowledge and creativity.
Opportunities
What creative opportunities can you see in this project? How could you challenge yourself
creatively in this project? You can refer to your previous experience here.
In this project I will be able to learn how to do things I have not attempted before. The main
one will be designing the packaging of an energy drink. I have learned certain elements about
designing when doing tasks such as Social Action and Vegetarian Recipe Cards, but because this
is about advertisement I will need to learn new things such as how to gain the attention of your
target market.
What technical opportunities for development are available in this project? What technical
challenges could you set yourself? You can refer to your previous experience here.
As I will be creating all of my designs using Photoshop CS6, I will have the opportunity to
further develop my skills with this software. I will be aiming to use certain effects that I have
not used in previous projects like ‘skew’, ‘stroke’, and ‘curves’. If for my magazine advert I am
unable to find suitable images online I may have to take them myself, these means I will have to
develop a wider of skills with a camera and may also learn more about image manipulation
when I am editing my pictures.
How could the skills you are using and developing here be useful in a professional context?
Consider the requirements for different job roles.
Any editing skills learnt will be useful in regards to photography and also web design. These
skills are highly useful in the professional world and could give me a greater chance of getting
the job I want. Any possible use of a camera will be also be a great learning experience and
could help me secure jobs later on in life too.
What opportunities for designing for different media does this project give you? Which final
product type interests you the most and why?
This project will help me gain a greater understanding for what is necessary for each media
type, and will help me in the future if I have to undertake a similar task. Out of all of the
product types the web banner interests me the most I believe it is the one where you have to
use the best attention gaining devices. Despite being small it still allows for a lot of design but at
the same time needs a level of simplicity as to not deter your target market. Because web
banners are used on some of the most popular websites on the internet (YouTube, ebay), so
the scale is much larger than the other two media types.
