WHO QUESTION
Someone called Julie.
Asking about the author of an action
WHO QUESTION
Someone was the author of the action of calling
Julie, but we don’t know who it was.
WHO called Julie?
Look at some more who-questions. In each of them,
we’re asking about the AUTHOR of an action.
WHO QUESTION
Who likes pizza?
Who kissed Lary?
Who watched the movie last night?
You know how to use do/does/did in questions. But
did is not used in the question above. Why not?
Because who refers to the subject of the sentence.
When we ask a who-question and
who refers to the subject, we don’t
use do, does or did.

Who called Julie?
Who did call Julie?
Take a look at this dialogue with who-questions in which
who refers to the subject.

Remember: when who refers to the subject, we don’t use
do, does, or did.

Someone was the receiver of Daniel’s action of
sending a message, but we don’t know who it was.
Look at some more who-questions. In each of them, we
want to know about the RECEIVER of an action.
WHO QUESTION
Who do we need to speak to?
Who does Julie call every night?
Who did you eat lunch with yesterday?
We used do, does, or did in each of the questions
above. Why?
Because they all referred to the receiver of the action.
When we ask a who-question which
asks for the RECEIVER of the action,
we use do, does or did.

Who did you meet at the mall?
Who does Jane call every night?
Who do you ask for help when you
have a problem?
Take a look at this dialogue with who-questions in which
who refers to the object.

Remember: when who refers to the object, we use do,
does, or did.
