1. Job roles
Director
“the person responsible for the interpretive aspects of a stage, film, or television
production; theperson who supervises the integration of all the elements, as acting, stagin
g, and lighting, required torealize the writer's conception. Compare producer”http://dictio
nary.reference.com/browse/director
From researching the role of a director within the media industry and looking at the quote
above, I now understand that a director’s role is to take charge and direct people in all
aspects of a media production. The director will
have a particular vision in mind when creating a
media production and will make decisions on all
elements such as acting, sound, lighting and so on
whilst supervising everything from pre-production
right through to the final editing.
Camera Person
“A camera operator or cameraman/camerawoman is a professional operator of
a film or video camera.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_operator
From researching the role of a camera person and looking at the quote above, I now
understand that a camera person’s role is to use a film or video camera and make decisions
such as where to position the camera in a given scene of shot. They will work in the
production stage and carry out a variety of
technical tasks whilst operating the camera. The
camera person will work alongside the director of
photography who will be very experienced and
has a lot of knowledge about camera lenses and
will decide on a particular camera lense to use in a
given scene/shot. Both the camera person and
director of photography will work very closely
with the director to create the directors overall creative vision in a particular scene/shot.
They will also work very closely with the sound recorder and boom operator to ensure that
the camera shots and sound all work well together.
2. Sound Recording

http://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/sound-engineer
From researching and looking at the quote above, I now understand that a sound
technician’s role is to work in both production and pre-production stage of broadcasting.
They have the role of recording digetic sound in a
particular scene and also mixing and editing non-
digetic sound. Sound recorders work very closely
with the boom operator whose job is to try and
achieve the best possible sound quality in a
particular scene by holding the boom arm with the
microphone whilst holding it as close to the action
in a particular scene as they can without getting the
boom arm in the shot. Like the camera person,
both the sound recorder and boom arm operator work under the supervision of the
director.
Lighting
“Lighting technicians ('sparks') set up and operate lighting equipment in television and in
film, generally specialising in one or the other as the techniques and equipment differ”
http://www.prospects.ac.uk/lighting_technician_broadcasting_film_video_job_description.
htm
From the quote above and research I now understand that a lightings technicians job within
the media industry has the role of setting up all lighting equipment and operating it during
the production stage. The lighting technician will work
closely with the director to help create his vision,
whilst also working closely with the sound recorder,
camera boom operator to ensure that all the elements
within the production stage work effectively together
in a particular scene/shot. The lighting technichian will
have a wide range of knowledge about how to use all
types of lighting equipment, whilst also knowing which lighting to use to create a particular
mood for a certain scene/shot.
