The director of a music video conceives of the artistic and dramatic aspects of the video and instructs the musical act and technical crew. The director decides what scenes to shoot and how, as well as what happens in each scene. The camera operator controls the camera under the direction of the director, composing shots according to the director's instructions. The boom operator holds a microphone on a pole close to actors to record their audio without entering the camera frame. The lighting technician is responsible for rigging and controlling artificial lights on set to properly light scenes for the video.
