2. EXPECTATIONS
Come to class ready
to learn.
Enter the classroom
considerately and
on time.
Settle down, relax
and prepare to learn
quickly.
Phones and
earphones in your
bag.
Keep your
conversation on
task.
Don’t talk over
anyone.
Above all, always be
kind.
3. WHAT DOES A CLASS WITH ME
GENERALLY LOOK LIKE?I will nearly always start with retrieval practice regarding something we learnt last lesson, last week or
even from a couple of weeks ago. Getting information out (rather than putting it in) is what helps you
remember.
Then we’ll go through it as a class or swap with a partner so we all get some feedback on what we have remembered.
Then we’ll make sure we’re all clear on our new learning intention for today.
I’ll give you some information
We’ll do an activity, on our own or in a group.
I will nearly always end with a JOL (judgement of learning). This helps with our metacognition (knowing how we learn). You need
to know what you know and what you don’t know – and so do I!
4. LESSON PLAN FOR TODAY
Objective 1
• Year 11 –Comprehend terms, concepts and issues in relation to archaeology and
ancient societies.
• You will be looking at archaeological dating techniques with me. We will then
examine some of the limitations of dating artefacts and human bones.
• Year 12 – Comprehend terms, concepts and issues in relation to Ancient Egypt.
• You will need to go to the Padlet https://padlet.com/lorin_ward/iul8o5s1h7rppgnr I
have created where you are provided some introductory resources on New
Ancient Egypt. Each of you will be allocated a concept/issue from the time. Look at
the website linked on the Padlet and summarise the key points for your
concept/issue. Create a post on the class Padlet. Then: Read your classmate’s Padlet
posts and write a TEEL paragraph for each of the remaining 3 topics.
• We’ll then come back together to watch a video on the site we will be examining in
depth in the coming lessons – Amarna.
5. YEAR 11:
ABSOLUTE VS
RELATIVE DATING
• Relative dating: A time
period related to
something else e.g
older than, younger
than.
• Absolute dating: an
exact time, e.g 6000
years old.

6. STRATIGRAPHY
The vertical section which shows the layers in
the excavation; Greek for ‘writing the layers’
The layers at the top being the newest,
layers at the bottom the oldest
Which type of dating method is this? Why?
7. CARBON
DATING
• Uses C14, is
therefore
sometimes known
as C14 dating.
• Watch the
embedded video
and then summerise
in your own words
what carbon dating
is.
• Which type of
dating method is
8. GAPS IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE-
ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECONSTRUCTIONS
• https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/ancient-art-civilizations/ancient-near-
east1/sumerian/a/archaeological-reconstructions
• Directed Reading and Thinking Activity (DRTA) as a group.
• Brainstorm: What might be some of the limitations of reconstructions? Physical, social,
ethical etc.
9. THE BOUNDARY
STELAE
• How might the significance of
this source have changed over
time?
• Are there any potential gaps
in the evidence?
• Thinking about religion and
science, how and why might
we view this source differently
today?
Stelae A. Discovered 1714, Dated to 1349 BCE
10. THE LOST CITY OF
AMARNA
•This is the
archaeological site
we will examine in
more depth over
the coming
lessons.
