6. Whew! This fast few weeks
was so stressful. I really need
to have a break and go to a
place where I can relax.
Hmmm..?? I’ve heard that
there are a lot of beautiful
places in Davao. Can you
help me choose?
Primo’s thought…
7.
8. Primo’s thought… Hmm… I think I know where to go.
I want a place where I feel like I’m in
Baguio City, the City of Pines. I’ve
heard there are various pines growing
in Eden Nature Park at Eden
Bayabas, Toril, Davap City. I want
to know how these plants reproduce?
Do you also want to know how?
Hmm, if George is here am sure she
will also be excited to discover too.
Come, let’s go to the place and learn
the how’s of this plant.
9. GUIDE CARD 1
Flowers are often the showiest part of most plants, but their
main function is facilitating reproduction through seeds. However, there
are many plants out there which never produce flowers. They are called
gymnosperms, from the Greek words gymno (which means naked) and
sperma (seed). Conifers are one of its examples. These plants produce
seeds in cones. Their seeds are “naked seeds”; they are not covered with
fruits. Most conifers are trees and shrubs with leaves like needles. They
also generally prefer low temperature. Thus, they are abundant in
temperature regions and at high elevations in warmer countries like in
Baguio City, Bukidnon, and some other high mountains. Pine trees are
one of the examples of conifers. Another common examples are cedars,
spruces, yews, pines, redwoods, cypresses, firs, and junipers.
12. Wow! That was a tough
information about the
cone-bearing plants.
Now I know its
characteristics. But wait,
how did they
reproduce?
Primo’s reaction…
13. GUIDE CARD 2
Cone-bearing plants: Reproduction
The reproductive structure of conifers develops
in cones. Most conifers have male and female cones
on different branches of the same tree or shrub.
Conifers have two kinds of cones- pollen cone and
seed cone. A pollen cone is a male cone that makes
pollen grains. The pollen spreads through the air. The
seed cone is a female cone that produces egg cell.
Now, take a look on the life cycle of a cone bearing
plant.
14. “The Hows of the naked
Seed”
Male
Cone
Female
Cone
Seed
Pollen + Egg
Cone-bearing plants have two
types of cones: female cones
and male cones. Reproduction
begins when one of the pollen
grains from inside a pollen sac
on the male cone floats through
the air to the scale of a female
cone. A pollen tube then grows
from the pollen grain toward
the female ovule. Sperm cells
move through the pollen tube
and one of them fertilizes an
egg cell, which then develops
into a seed. The winged seed
floats to the ground and begins
to germinate. As the top of the
seedling reaches for light, the
hypocotyl straightens and the
cotyledons spread out.A hypocotyl is a germinating seedling's stem,
normally found underneath the seed leaves but
above the root.
15. Wow! that’s awesome. So the
growth of these types of plant
is just like a cycle. It’s a
repetitive sequence of events. I
really liked this vacation. I did
not only enjoy but I also
learned a lot. Hmmm.. I’m so
excited to share my learnings
to George. I’m sure she’ll love
to hear all about cone bearing
plants. Oh, wait, do you like to
play? I have here a treasure
box. Let us see what’s inside.
Primo’s reaction…

24. ASSESSMENT CARD 2
How well did you learn?
Directions: Read the paragraph about Baguio City. Find out why the city is known as the Summer Capital and the City of
Pines. After which, inside the box below the picture, write at least 5 characteristics that describe the conifer, the pine trees.
Good luck
Baguio City, which is perched on high elevation, is known as the “Summer Capital” of the Philippines
because of its cold weather. The original blueprint of the city was made by American architect Daniel Burnham (which is
the reason why the main park at the heart of the city is known as Burnham Park). It’s also known as the “City of Pines”
because, well, pine trees dominate the landscape.
