2. The name ‘vibe’ is short and simple which
could implicate the magazine is easy to
understand and read. It also links to the
genre as vibe is often used in rap and hip
hop and music related language which
appeal to the audience. The fact its only one
word enhances its meaning and makes it
more memorable.
Simple design which shows the
magazine is classy and simple and
doesn't need abstract affects and
unusual fonts to be appealing.
The mast head looks quite
symmetrical, all the letters are the
same size and equally spaced out
this gives a sense of balance, this
could imply that the magazine has
balanced views and is not one sided,
which is important in magazines not
to be seen bias.
There is a mixture of capitals
and none capitals in none
grammatically correct places
this could imply that the
magazine is going against
mainstream, breaking the rules
and is different, this gives the
magazine personality and
shows the attitude of this
publication.
Bold font which has sharp corners
which looks cutting edge and
different. This implies the magazine
is new, fresh and different from the
rest. I think I will use a bold font in
my magazine to look eye catching
like this masthead.
Takes up the whole top of the page,
makes it look important and easy to
read, but often has the main
character/stars head in front which
gives them even more status, look
important and makes it clear who the
main stories in this magazine are
about.
The masthead comes in different
colours depending on the image
used, this compliments the image
with a colour which suits their
personality and makes it more
aesthetically pleasing. This is also
gives a sense that the magazine is
made for that artist in particular
which gives them status and
importance and looks as if they’ve
taken over the magazine completely.
This is also gives a sense that the
magazine identity pleases the
majority of the public as different
issues look different which will
appeal to different peoples
preferences. The colours mainly used
have connotations of Love, anger,
warning, danger and money. These
give a sense that the publications is
high class and the danger
connotations make it look prestige
and threat to other magazines.
3. The mast head looks very compact for its size this could
implicate that the magazine is also jam packed with
information for its size which will appeal to the audience as
they will be getting more for their money. I think I will make my
mast head quite compact as it looks neat on the page and
shows the magazine is full of information which is one of the
most important features.
The outline and the symmetry
together gives the mast head a
3D look which makes it stand out
on the page and more eye
catching this is effective as its
more visible and more
noticeable.
The colour palette is mainly reds, whites and
blacks, they’re are very bold contrasting colours
which stand out from each other and make it
easy to read. The red has conations of rich, red
carpet, class, and danger this could be used to
show the magazine is about fame and celebrates
on the red carpet, another connotation could be
that the red is used like a warning, quite explicit,
shocking and dangerous content which would
relate to the publications aggressive,
controversial and different views.
The masthead has pointed edges
which look sharp and could
implicate harsh cutting edge views
of the magazines with a quite non
mainstream attitude publication.
When you say ‘NME’ out loud
it sounds like enemy which
may also suggest the attitude
of the publication, quite break
the rules, none mainstream
and original.
The mast head looks very
symmetrical which could
implicate balance, that the
magazine has balanced views
and supports equality. The ‘M’
being so symmetrical almost
looks like a magazine being
opened which is affective as it
is for a music magazine. I like
the way it looks symmetrical
and think I will make my
masthead look symmetrical as
it looks balanced and quite
simple.
4. The colour palette is
similar to the last two
mastheads as it sticks
to the trend of black,
white and red. I think
these three colours
are most commonly
used as they stand
out and contrast with
each other. They also
have conations of
fame, wealth, anger ,
passion and the red
carpet. I will most
probably use a similar
colour palette as this
seems to be the
current trend and will
appeal to my target
market.
The shadow on the mast head makes it look 3D and stand
out on the page this makes it more eye-catching and visible
to the reader. The shadow also looks as if its in the spot
light on stage this could enhance the fact the magazine is
famous and well known, and could represent the kind of
people in the magazine. I think I will use a shadow on my
masthead as it will look more aesthetically pleasing and
will represent the fame and characters in my magazine.
The outline makes it
stand out from the
background and
makes it easy to
read. This is
effective as its not
more accessible to
read.
The font has curved serifs
which give it more of a
friendly approach, different
from ‘NME’mast head. It
also has old fashioned
connotations which make it
seem more well respected
and traditional which could
reflect the publication as It
has quite traditional morals
and music taste. The serifs
on the ‘R’ and ‘S’ are
emphasised which makes it
more classy as it it looks
like old-fashioned
handwriting.
Often the rolling stone mast head is obstructed
by the main character/star. This is done with
purpose to show that the magazine is so well
known that even with the mast head obstructed
its easily recognised. This shows how powerful
the mast head can be on a magazine.
5. The mast head looks very balanced which is similar to
the ‘NME’ magazine, this gives a sense that the
magazine has balanced views and is not bias. The two
‘m’s especially balance it and almost make it look like
the same word repeated which makes it look
symmetrical which also supports its balanced views.
The font also looks
very retro which
links to the music
in the magazine.
This is effective as
you can tell what
the magazine is
about before really
looking at it.
The fact its all in lower case
shows its quite relaxed and
not a striking in your face
magazine. It could also
implicate that its not
mainstream and doesn’t
follow grammatical rules
which makes it seem quite
different.
The dot on the ‘I’ looks like a
CD or record which is
associated with djs and
dance music. This makes it
easy to assume what kind of
magazine this mast head is
for.
The font has very curved edges
and a low stem, this makes it
look like a very laidback
magazine and that it gives
laidback comfortable
approaches to gossip, unlike pop
magazines which are mainly
based on gossip for young teens.
Simple colour
scheme which gives
a laidback
approach, the
colour black
contrast with the
background and
makes it easy to
read. Black has
connotations of the
unknown and
mystery. This give
the magazine a
personality of quite
an unusually
controversial
magazine. This
magazine is also
aimed at dancing
and clubbing music
and it is often dark
in clubs etc so the
colour could be
used to represent
that.
6. The mast head looks very balanced which is similar to
