1. A Leisure Assessment of Older Adults in Senior Housing
Chapter Two: Literature Review
2.1. Introduction
Leisure activities are critical aspects in the life of every individual in the face of the earth.
This study evaluates the leisure and recreational activities among the old people in the senior
housing. The background of the elderly, is people living in low income senior housing thus
having no access to classic avenues for recreational activities. Nevertheless, they are individuals
with life activities worth conducting and carrying out to the extent of bringing out the best of
their leisure times. Although Juniu and Henderson (2001; 8) failed to concur with the idea of
leisure being a standard of choice and free chosen. They stated that the terms the disparity with
regard to empirical support due to lack of adequate preference as leisure actions are communally
prepared and fashioned by the inequalities in the society (Stebbins 2005). Hickerson et al (2008)
argued that health and leisure are holistic concepts; thus, they are critical areas that cannot be
termed or addressed on only at an individual level. This chapter gives a detailed literature review
on the concept of leisure with a special emphasis to the old. The study aims at evaluating the
leisure activities of elderly in senior housing. In context, the literature aims at critically and
conclusively discussing the various studies that looked into the nature and effects of leisure and
recreational activities among the old. The section will clearly evaluate and outline the research
gap or dearth in the field of study involved with the leisure activities among the elderly living in
the senior homes.
The global population is on the increase, and the American population is growing old at a
higher rate. With improved health care, close to 10% of the nation’s population consists of senior
citizens (individuals with sixty years and above). The elderly are individuals with their own
challenges, and it is estimated by Kaplan et al. (2008), that by 2050, 25% of the American
population will be composed of the elderly. On critically evaluating the literature available from
1978 to 2005, Kaplan (2008) illustrated that only 35% of the elderly population qualify to be
termed as successful agers. This shows that the remaining percentage are facing it rough in their
old age or else going through challenging situations without the energy to solve them amicably
and in haste. Nevertheless, the government and community at large have a role to play in the
society to n sure that the aged are looked after and their welfare if ensured. They should not be
left to live their old age in challenge sand problems that could lead them to early death or dive
deeper into old age ailments due to stress emanating from life issues. Annear, Cushman, and
Gidlow (2008) illustrated that a majority of health problems encountered at old age are
preventable as they find direct association to the onset of a more sedentary life. This clearly
illustrates that; enhancing the elderly embracing leisure time physic al activity (LTPA) brings
about an opportunity for reducing the prevalence of morbidity at later stages in life and initiate a
potential burden of aging on the public health sector. This calls for the joint efforts of
government officials and scholars to come up with studies looking into the effectiveness of
leisure activities among the older adults within the homes for the elderly. Leisure is all about
dealing with agreeable obligations and getting an attitude that results to behavior that is highly
crucial and part of leisure (Stebbins, 2005).
