• Online Learning is Internet-enabled learning.
• Online Learning is the use of technology to enable people
to learn anytime and anywhere.
• Any learning experience or environment that relies upon
the Internet as the primary delivery mode of
communication and presentation, and that frequently
takes place away from the physical campus.
• Online learning is essentially any learning experience that
relies upon internet and intranet delivery of course
information.

Why is e-learning important for Education? Why is e-learning important for Education?
A student who is learning in a way that uses information and
communication technologies (ICTs) is using e-learning. These
interactive technologies support many different types of
capability:
•internet access to digital versions of materials unavailable
locally
•internet access to search, and transactional services
•interactive diagnostic or adaptive tutorials
•interactive educational games
• remote control access to local physical devices
• personalised information and guidance for learning
support
• simulations or models of scientific systems
• communications tools for collaboration with other
students and teachers
• tools for creativity and design
• virtual reality environments for development and
manipulation
• data analysis, modelling or organisation tools and
applications
• electronic devices to assist disabled learners

Skills for Successful Online LearningSkills for Successful Online Learning
•Personal skills.
In the online environment, and particularly as a distance
education student, it's beneficial to be an active learner
who takes responsibility for their own learning, motivation
and self discipline.
•Literacy skills.
Studying online is dependent on strong reading and writing
skills. Much subject content will be delivered by readings,
and a lot of your communication will be in written form. If
you know these are not your areas of strength, seek some
support and try and develop these skills.
•Study skills.
Studying online requires many of the same skills as
traditional face-to-face study. Things like time management,
motivation, being clear of expectations and exam
preparation still remain important aspects of study.
•General computer skills.
You will need at least a basic level of proficiency in computer
use to successfully study online. Necessary -skills include
word processing, file management, saving and printing.
Skills for Successful Online LearningSkills for Successful Online Learning
•Internet skills.
Being able to go to specific URLs, book-marking, saving and
printing web pages will all be important skills. More
advanced skills such as web searching and website
evaluation would also benefit most students.
•Collaboration.
Be prepared to explore key concepts and specialized
knowledge through online forum discussions with other
students, and your lecturers. Form an online study group or
find a study buddy you can talk to on the phone or email.

Online support:
All the essential learning content and learning tools you
need for your subjects are found within Interact. Each
subject you're enrolled in has its own subject site.
Workload:
Distance education students usually study two subjects per
session, with each subject needing around 8 to 10 hours of
study per week. Full-time and part-time study options are
often available so you can vary your study load to fit in with
your schedule - from one subject per session to four.
Study Materials:
As a distance education student, all your study materials are
conveniently delivered to your home or workplace by mail
before your course begins. These include printed study
notes, CD-ROMs and DVDs.
Computer access :
you will need regular access to a computer and the internet.
You may also need access to a printer, a scanner, and a
device for backing up your work.

Lectures and tutorials:
Some lecturers may use telephone tutorials,
videoconferencing, on campus residential schools and
weekend schools to ensure you receive the best learning
and teaching experience while studying by distance
education.
Contacting your lecturers:
We encourage direct contact with lecturers via telephone,
email, fax or the online forums during Session. Office
telephone numbers and addresses are supplied to all
students, both on the web and in the subject outline.

Interacting with other students:
You can interact with lecturers and fellow students by email,
online forums, telephone tutorials, videoconferences, on
campus residential schools or weekend schools.
Assignments and exams:
Assignments can be submitted electronically or by mail, and
students can attend examinations at locations in most
metropolitan and regional centres throughout Australia or in
one of our examination centres in most major cities around
the world.
Residential Schools:
Some subjects offered by distance education have
residential schools, which are held on campus. Attendance
at some residential schools is compulsory, but others are
optional.
Library:
Library website is your gateway to a huge range of online
resources, providing you with library services anytime,
anywhere. With access to thousands of electronic resources,
audio-visual material, books, and journals you'll have all the
resources you need to get the most out of your degree.
Facilities:
Distance education students have access to university
facilities across the campuses.

Time management:
Don't procrastinate:
Look through your study materials as soon as you get them
and plan
Get Started. Today. Now!
Reading through the study guide, or re-visiting the
assignment topic will be getting you somewhere. If you have
any questions, contact the support staff at Campus to get
some tips or guidance
Get organized.
Improve your time management skills and get yourself
organized. This sometimes means changing the way you have
done things in the past or how you go about the task
Online Distance education study tipsOnline Distance education study tipsOnline Distance education study tipsOnline Distance education study tips
Keep your tasks bite-sized.
It is amazing how much you can achieve if you set aside one
hour of time somewhere in each day. All those little bites
make a meal out of study.
For larger tasks,
Like assignments and set aside blocks of quality time
without interruptions - perhaps at a library or even on
campus
Help yourself 'get in the zone'
by creating a study atmosphere. Have a special place to
study with all you need on hand, put on some quiet music
or use aromatherapy to get yourself focused.
Get support
Let your friends and family know what you're doing and why.
Let others know what you need in terms of time; renegotiate
household tasks with partners and children; and let your
friends know you won't be up for a big night out just before an
assignment is due.
Contact your lecturer
if you have any difficulties with the interpretation of an
assignment question or the academic content. Staff contact
details and consultation times are included in your subject
outline.

Learning Skills Advisors
can assist you in preparing assignments, provide guidance
on how to write a report or essay or how to structure a
written piece work. There is also available specific support
for English skills and mathematics/statistics.
Your subject forum
is another avenue of support and assistance open to you.
Other students are often helpful in discussing and clarifying
assignment expectations.
