My film opening uses conventions from comedy and drama genres to challenge existing media in an original way. I incorporate classic comedy conventions like slapstick while adding my own unique twist to appeal to both comedy fans and new audiences. For example, I adapted the concept of slapstick comedy to my scenario to allow audiences to relate to the characters. Some issues arose in implementing comedy conventions on a limited budget, requiring alternative solutions. The opening combines elements of slapstick, self-deprecating, and parody humor to create a hybrid comedy experience that engages and entertains audiences. Characters are introduced in a relatable way, such as a bad singing inspector, allowing audiences to connect through shared experiences.

Challenging Comedy Conventions
1. In what ways does your product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Comedy Conventions
My film opening uses conventions from comedy and drama to challenge
existing media products as it uses common and easily relatable features to
the audience in a new and original way to attract my target audience in to
my view my film instead of watching the same old comedy films out there.
This is because I have used classic genre conventions and added my very
own unique unseen before twist to appeal to comedy fans and to
hopefully attract new audiences to come and watch my film too.
For example, slap stick comedy is a well known and very popular form of
comedy and I have taken the concept of this a adapted it and applied to
my set and scenario. This will allow the audience to relate to this as they
may have experienced such actions and so can start to build a “special”
connection to the characters engaging and enjoyable the film even more.
3. Comedy Conventions - Characters
Comedy characters are often associated with being rather clueless and not
very wise yet are often in high ranked positions in their job field, this is to
create humour and interest for the audience. e.g. A police inspector or a
lead doctor or a CEO of a big business. I chose to have my main actor as a
police Inspector as with his nature and state of mind he would provide the
audience with humour and excitement.
4. Issues
During filming and pre-production I experienced a few issues with
implementing some comedy conventions and forms into my film opening.
This is due to props, equipment and cost. In order to carry out some classic
comedy conventions such as the crazy, wacky hair and clothes it can cost a
lot and on a very limited budget that was extremely hard to do. So
therefore, I had to make do with what was available and I planned and
prepared my actors to suit their roles. One further issue related to costume
and make up was that my lead actor had gotten a haircut a few days
before and so I had to change his costume to suit his new style.
5. Forms
The comedy genre can deliver humour in a range of forms such as; slap
stick, Deadpan, Self-deprecating and Parody. These are just a few of the
many ways movie studios create humour to entertain their audience. In my
film opening I combined elements from slapstick, self-deprecating and
parody humour. This is because I wanted to give my audience a comedy
experience like they haven’t seen before. By combining these forms I
managed to create a comedy hybrid to engage and entertain the audience.
This gives the audience an enjoyable experience and therefore possibly
leading to them advertising my film via word of mouth.
6. How characters were introduced
My characters were introduced to the audience in a way they could relate
and find humour in. For example, when the audience first meet the
Inspector he is singing and walking into the bathroom, providing a
comedic effect because of how bad he is at singing. This also allows the
audience to relate and connect with the Inspectors because they have
experienced bad singing at some point during their life. As a result of this
further on in the film the audience will find the humour elements funnier it
will give them the feeling of escapism and as if they are in the film with the
characters.
