Virtue Ethics
Virtue ethics is a broad term for theories that emphasize
the role of character and virtue in moral philosophy
rather than either doing one’s duty or acting in order to
bring about good consequences.
A virtue ethicist is likely to give you this kind of moral
advice:
“Act as a virtuous person would act in your
situation.”
“Act as a virtuous person would act
in your situation.”
“virtuous"
“virtuous"

implies moral excellence in character

Virtue Ethics
Virtue ethics is person rather than action based:
it looks at the virtue or moral character of the person
carrying out an action, rather than at ethical duties and
rules, or the consequences of particular actions.

Deontology is an ethical theory that
says actions are good or bad
according to a clear set of rules.

Actions that align with these rules
are ethical, while actions that don't

utilitarianism
is an ethical theory that
determines right from wrong by
focusing on outcomes.
utilitarianism
Halimbawa ang pagpili kung pagsosolve ng situational
problem o mathematical problem, dahil kilala mo ang
sarili mo na magaling sa math problems pipiliin mo ito
dahil mas magagawa mo ito ng maayos.
You will avoid the thing you are not good at because it
will bring you displeasure.
utilitarianism
utilitarianism is a moral principle that
holds that the morally right course of
action in any situation is the one that
produces the greatest balance of benefits
over harms for everyone

Aristotle
• Quest to understand and live a life of ma oral
character that this char er-based approach
to morality assumes that we acquire virtue
through practice
• A virtuous person is someone who has ideal
character traits these traits derive from
natural internal tendencies

their characters rather than a singular
action, For Aristotle, morality has more to
do with the question “ how should I be?”
rather than "what should I do?
Aristotle “Virtue ethics”
Why Virtue of Ethics important
according to Aristotle?
How we applied virtue ethics in
life according to Aristotle
St. Thomas Aquinas
Virtue ethics of
St. Thomas Aquinas “Virtue ethics”
Aquinas takes up Aristotle's stress on our
sociality, together with the thought that
human beings are the only animals who
will develop an articulate sense of good
and bad (if all goes as it should go in their
lives)
St. Thomas Aquinas “Virtue ethics”
if we can recall the theory of Aquinas it is
that “good is to be done and pursued, and
evil is to
be avoided” in this theory, Aquinas stated
that reason reveals particular natural
laws that are good for humans such as
self-preservation, marriage and family,
and the desire to know God.
"Be this sort of person" rather than "Follow
this rule.“
"What is my duty?" becomes instead "What
sort of person shall I become?"
