* Pulse code modulation is a method that is used to convert
an analog signal into a digital signal, so that modified analog
signal can be transmitted through the digital communication
network.

high and low (0 and 1).

In sampling we are using PAM sampler that is Pulse Amplitude Modulation sampler
which converts continuous amplitude signal into Discrete - time- continuous signal
(PAM pulses).
The difference between the original analog signal and the translated digital signal is called
quantizing error.

quantization intervals will be in powers of 2.
οƒ˜ In PCM, 8 bit code is used and so we have 256 intervals for
quantizing (128 levels in the positive direction and 128 levels in
negative direction).

The digitization of analog signal is done by the encoder. It designates
each quantized level by a binary code. The sampling done here is the
sample-and-hold process.
These three sections LPF, Sampler, and Quantizer LPF, Sampler, and
Quantizer will act as an analog to digital converter. Encoding
minimizes the bandwidth used.
*PCM – Encoding
*Regenerative Repeater
This section increases the signal strength. The output of the channel
also has one regenerative repeater circuit, to compensate the signal
loss and reconstruct the signal, and also to increase its strength.
The decoder circuit decodes the pulse coded waveform to reproduce
the original signal. This circuit acts as the demodulator.

*After the digital-to-analog conversion is done by the regenerative
circuit and the decoder, a low-pass filter is employed, called as the
reconstruction filter to get back the original signal.
*Hence, the Pulse Code Modulator circuit digitizes the given analog
signal, codes it and samples it, and then transmits it in an analog
form. This whole process is repeated in a reverse pattern to obtain
the original signal.
*Bit Rate And Bandwidth Requirements of
PCM
*The bit rate of a PCM signal can be calculated form the number of
bits per sample x sampling rate
*Bit rate = nbx fs
*The bandwidth required to transmit this signal depends on the
type of line encoding used.
*A digitized signal will always need more bandwidth than the
original analog signal. Because of robustness and other features of
digital transmission.
*PCM Advantages
*The PCM signal is more resistant to interference than normal signal.
*Analog signal can be transmitted over a high - speed
digital communication system.
- Uniform Transmission Quality
*Probability of occurring error will reduce by the use of appropriate coding
methods.
- Good Performance over Very poor Transmission Paths
*PCM is used in Telecom system, digital audio recording, digitized video
special effects, digital video, voice mail.
- Compatibility of different classes of Traffic in the Network
*PCM is also used in Radio control units as transmitter and also receiver for
remote controlled cars, boats, planes.

*What is Line Coding?
*A line code is the code used for data transmission of a digital signal
over a transmission line.
*This process of coding is chosen so as to avoid overlap and distortion
of signal such as inter-symbol interference.
*Mapping of binary information sequence that enters the channel.
*Ex. β€œ1” maps to +A pulse; β€œ0” to –A pulse

There are 2 major categories: return–to–zero (RZ) and nonreturn–to–zero (NRZ).
With RZ coding, the waveform returns to a zero–volt level for a portion (usually one–half)
of the bit interval.

*Unipolar Non-Return to Zero (NRZ):
β€’ Duration of the MARK pulse (Ζ¬ ) is equal to the duration (To)of the
symbol slot. A Low in data input has no pulse.

β€’Require a less bandwidth for transmission.
*Disadvantages:
β€’Presence of DC level (indicated by spectral line at 0 Hz).

*Unipolar Return to Zero (RZ):
A High in data, though represented by a Mark pulse, its
duration T0 is less than the symbol bit duration.
Half of the bit duration remains high but it immediately returns to
zero and shows the absence of pulse during the remaining half of the
bit duration.

Advantages:
β€’ Simple in implementation
β€’ spectral line present at the symbol rate can be used as a clock.
Disadvantages:

Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ):
In polar NRZ encoding, we use two levels of voltage amplitude.
 In this type of Polar signaling, a High in data is represented by a
positive pulse, while a Low in data is represented by a negative
pulse.
 If there is no change, the bit is 0; if there is a change, the bit is 1.

*It is simple.
*No low-frequency components are present.

Return-to-Zero (RZ):
*The main problem with NRZ encoding occurs when the sender and receiver
clocks are not synchronized. The receiver does not know when one bit has ended
and the next bit is starting.
*One solution is the return-to-zero (RZ) scheme, which uses three values: positive,
negative, and zero.
*In RZ, the signal changes not between bits but during the bit. In the following
figure, we see that the signal goes to 0 in the middle of each bit.
*It remains there until the beginning of the next bit. Proper synchronization.

β€’ In bipolar encoding (sometimes called multilevel binary), there are
three voltage levels (1, 0, -1),

β€’ In Manchester encoding, the duration of the bit is divided into two halves.
β€’ The voltage remains at one level during the first half and moves to the other
level during the second half.

A β€˜Zero’ is -ve in 1st half and +ve in 2nd half.

*The word Companding is a combination of Compressing and
Expanding, which means that it does both.
*This is a non-linear technique used in PCM which compresses the
data at the transmitter and expands the same data at the receiver.

*Uniform quantization is achieved at A = 1, where the characteristic curve is
linear and no compression is done.

*The processing of the system results in an error, which is the

predictor, to obtain a better output.

β€’ To reduce the transmitted bit 1 bit Quantizer is used in Delta Modulation.
*Delta Modulation
Where the sampling rate is much higher and the step size after quantization
is of a smaller value Ξ”, such a modulation is termed as delta modulation. It is also
known as 1-bit Quantizer.
Features of Delta Modulation
* An over-sampled input is taken to make full use of the signal correlation.
* The quantization design is simple.
* The input sequence is much higher than the Nyquist rate.
* The quality is moderate.
* The step-size is very small, i.e., Ξ” delta.
* Delta Modulation is a simplified form of DPCM technique, also viewed as 1-bit
DPCM scheme.
* As the sampling interval is reduced, the signal correlation will be higher.

  • 26. *Pulse Code Modulation And Demodulation * Pulse code modulation is a method that is used to convert an analog signal into a digital signal, so that modified analog signal can be transmitted through the digital communication network. * PCM is in binary form, so there will be only two possible states high and low (0 and 1). * (We can also get back our analog signal by demodulation) * The Pulse Code Modulation process is done in three steps * Sampling, * Quantization and * Coding. * There are two specific types of pulse code modulations such as differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) and adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM)

  • 32. *Conversion In sampling we are using PAM sampler that is Pulse Amplitude Modulation sampler which converts continuous amplitude signal into Discrete - time- continuous signal (PAM pulses). There are 3 sampling methods: *Ideal - an impulse at each sampling instant *Natural - a pulse of short width with varying amplitude *Flattop - sample and hold, like natural but with single amplitude value
  • 37. *Quantizing οƒ˜ The process of measuring the numerical values of the samples in a suitable scale οƒ˜ The finite number of amplitude intervals is called the β€žquantizing intervalβ€Ÿ like quantizing interval. οƒ˜ Quantization intervals are coded in binary form, and so the quantization intervals will be in powers of 2. οƒ˜ In PCM, 8 bit code is used and so we have 256 intervals for quantizing (128 levels in the positive direction and 128 levels in negative direction).
  • 38. *Encoder The digitization of analog signal is done by the encoder. It designates each quantized level by a binary code. The sampling done here is the sample-and-hold process. These three sections LPF, Sampler, and Quantizer LPF, Sampler, and Quantizer will act as an analog to digital converter. Encoding minimizes the bandwidth used.
  • 40. *Regenerative Repeater This section increases the signal strength. The output of the channel also has one regenerative repeater circuit, to compensate the signal loss and reconstruct the signal, and also to increase its strength. The decoder circuit decodes the pulse coded waveform to reproduce the original signal. This circuit acts as the demodulator. *Decoder
  • 41. *Reconstruction Filter *After the digital-to-analog conversion is done by the regenerative circuit and the decoder, a low-pass filter is employed, called as the reconstruction filter to get back the original signal. *Hence, the Pulse Code Modulator circuit digitizes the given analog signal, codes it and samples it, and then transmits it in an analog form. This whole process is repeated in a reverse pattern to obtain the original signal.
  • 42. *Bit Rate And Bandwidth Requirements of PCM *The bit rate of a PCM signal can be calculated form the number of bits per sample x sampling rate *Bit rate = nbx fs *The bandwidth required to transmit this signal depends on the type of line encoding used. *A digitized signal will always need more bandwidth than the original analog signal. Because of robustness and other features of digital transmission.
  • 43. *PCM Advantages *The PCM signal is more resistant to interference than normal signal. *Analog signal can be transmitted over a high - speed digital communication system. - Uniform Transmission Quality *Probability of occurring error will reduce by the use of appropriate coding methods. - Good Performance over Very poor Transmission Paths *PCM is used in Telecom system, digital audio recording, digitized video special effects, digital video, voice mail. - Compatibility of different classes of Traffic in the Network *PCM is also used in Radio control units as transmitter and also receiver for remote controlled cars, boats, planes. - Low Manufacturing Cost

  • 45. *What is Line Coding? *A line code is the code used for data transmission of a digital signal over a transmission line. *This process of coding is chosen so as to avoid overlap and distortion of signal such as inter-symbol interference. *Mapping of binary information sequence that enters the channel. *Ex. β€œ1” maps to +A pulse; β€œ0” to –A pulse οƒ˜ Information: Fundamentally discrete in nature. οƒ˜ Transmitted over band-limited channel: Signal gets Dispersed. οƒ˜ Causes: Overlap and Distortion. οƒ˜ Distortion: Intersymbol Interference(ISI).
  • 46. *Introduction to line coding β€’ Binary Data: 1 and 0 β€’ Line Coding: A group of binary data to represent symbols. There are 2 major categories: return–to–zero (RZ) and nonreturn–to–zero (NRZ). With RZ coding, the waveform returns to a zero–volt level for a portion (usually one–half) of the bit interval.
  • 47. *Why Line Coding? *Line code selected to meet system requirements: *Transmitted power : Power consumption *Bit timing : Transitions in signal help timing recovery *Bandwidth efficiency : Reduce excessive transitions wastes *Low frequency content : Some channels block low frequencies *long periods of +A or of –A causes signal to β€œdroop” *Waveform should not have low - frequency content *Error detection : Ability to detect errors *Complexity/cost : Code implementable in chip at high speed?

  • 54. *Unipolar Non-Return to Zero (NRZ): β€’ Duration of the MARK pulse (Ζ¬ ) is equal to the duration (To)of the symbol slot. A Low in data input has no pulse.
  • 55. *Unipolar NRZ *Advantages: β€’Simple in implementation β€’Require a less bandwidth for transmission. *Disadvantages: β€’Presence of DC level (indicated by spectral line at 0 Hz). β€’Contains low frequency components. Causes β€œSignal Droop” β€’Does not have any error correction capability. β€’Does not possess any clocking component for synchronization.
  • 56. *Unipolar Return to Zero (RZ): A High in data, though represented by a Mark pulse, its duration T0 is less than the symbol bit duration. Half of the bit duration remains high but it immediately returns to zero and shows the absence of pulse during the remaining half of the bit duration.
  • 57. *Unipolar RZ Advantages: β€’ Simple in implementation β€’ spectral line present at the symbol rate can be used as a clock. Disadvantages: * No error correction. * Occupies twice the bandwidth as unipolar NRZ. * The signal droop is caused at the places where signal is non- zero at 0 Hz.
  • 60. *Polar NRZ Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ): In polar NRZ encoding, we use two levels of voltage amplitude.  In this type of Polar signaling, a High in data is represented by a positive pulse, while a Low in data is represented by a negative pulse.  If there is no change, the bit is 0; if there is a change, the bit is 1.
  • 62. *Polar NRZ Advantages *It is simple. *No low-frequency components are present. Disadvantages *Receiver decision is biggest problrm *No error correction. *No clock is present. *The signal droop is caused at the places where the signal is non-zero at 0 Hz.
