fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan
turned not back, and the sword of Saul
returned not empty.

In life and death they were not divided;
they were swifter than eagles; they were
stronger than lions.

25“How the mighty have fallen in the
midst of battle! “Jonathan lies slain on
your high places. 26 I am distressed for
you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant
have you been to me; your love was
extraordinary, surpassing the love of
women.
7. Commemoration (2 Samuel 1:22-27)
27“How the mighty have fallen, and the
weapons of war perished!”
8. Coronation (2 Samuel 2:1-4a)
1 After this David inquired of the LORD,
“Shall I go up into any of the cities of
Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go
up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?”
And he said, “To Hebron.”
10. Proverbs 3:5-6

and do not lean on your own
understanding. In all your ways
acknowledge him, and he will make
straight your paths.

2 So David went up there, and his two
wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail
the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
12. Coronation (2 Samuel 2:1-4a)
3 And David brought up his men who were
with him, everyone with his household,
and they lived in the towns of Hebron. 4a
And the men of Judah came, and there
they anointed David king over the house of
Judah.
13. How do you respond when you don’t
understand God’s timing?
14. Do you want to believe in a God who
always does exactly what you want
Him to, exactly when you think He
should?
15. Commendation (2 Samuel 2:4b-7)
4b When they told David, “It was the men
of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” 5 David
sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-
gilead and said to them, “May you be
blessed by the LORD, because you showed
this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried
him.
16. Commendation (2 Samuel 2:4b-7)
6 Now may the LORD show steadfast love
and faithfulness to you. And I will do good
to you because you have done this thing. 7
Now therefore let your hands be strong,
and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead,
and the house of Judah has anointed me
king over them.
17. How in the world???
• Not about Saul’s worth, but the trustworthiness of
God
• Determination won’t sustain us
• The object of David’s faith is what made it
consequential
• God fully understands the ramifications of what He
asks
• God is doing something bigger...testing & trials are
necessary & purposeful
• David was never at the mercy of Saul, but God alone
18. Psalm 57
To the choirmaster: According to Do Not Destroy.
Miktam of David, when he fled from Saul, in the
cave.
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you
my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will
take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry
out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for
me. He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to
shame him who tramples on me. Selah God will send out
his steadfast love and his faithfulness!
19. My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery
beasts – the children of man, whose teeth are spears and
arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. Be exalted, O
God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the
earth! They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed
down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into
it themselves. Selah My heart is steadfast, O God, my
heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! Awake,
my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will
sing praises to you among the nations.
20. For your steadfast love is great to the
heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Be
exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your
glory be over all the earth!
21. In regard to whose leadership do you most
need to trust God these days?
Editor's Notes
Read passage
Portrays Jonathan & Saul as combat heroes who led Israel to numerous victories…
Eagles & lions portrayed strength and speed…
Not divided…Jonathan was loyal to David but never abandoned his father…
Israel enjoyed a prosperous economy during Saul’s reign…relative peace and prosperity…
David calling for public mourning of Saul’s death…
Mighty from root word = prevail over an opponent
Extraordinary = frequently used in reference to God’s miraculous actions…this was a miraculous friendship…
Weapons of war refer to humans here…
After this = some time later…appropriate period of mourning has passed
David inquired = God is worthy of our inquiry…David recognizes that his kingship is not his own or of his own doing…God is doing something bigger…
Why Hebron?
Abraham once lived there…deep Israelite roots
Located in Judah, that was prophesied about to be connected to royal leadership
City of refuge…protection from vigilantes thinking David had something to do with Saul’s death
Descendants of Caleb lived there, and one of David’s wives was the widow of a descendant of Caleb…family connections
Hebron was one of the towns given to the priests as a place to live…Abiathar the priest is there…
…or do you take matters into your own hands?
…or do you trust your own understanding?
David was actually married to Saul’s daughter Michal…Saul offered the marriage because he saw it as a potential way to get rid of David, thinking that he’d die securing the bride price which was killing 100 Philistine warriors…after their marriage, as Saul’s paranoia grew, he eventually gave Michal to another man…David won’t be reunited with her until chapter 3 …
Multiple wives…David is not perfect here…two warnings:
Don’t read and discount your own sin (my sin isn’t a big deal because God loved David and he had this sin…)
Don’t read and discount your justification (I have been saved, made right with God, by God…)
Anointed = public sign of affirmation
This was God’s doing…David has not seized this for himself…all of this without dishonoring Saul, without being frustrated with God’s timing, etc…
Still not king of all Israel, just house of Judah…
Let’s spool this out…what if this was true for everyone? What if God was at our every whim? When we want God to be like this, we are shrinking him down to just the amount of “God” that we can get our head around…Don’t we want a God who is bigger than that?
Can you think of at least one example where His timing and plan was better, but you couldn’t see it at the time? (me with Stafford job and wanting to be married, etc.)
He is blessing these people because they honored the Lord’s anointed (who was his enemy)!!
Be strong & valiant = like God’s charge to Joshua after the death of Moses…even in the face of great loss and grief, God’s people can trust Him…
Our trust is secure because it’s placed in the One who is from everlasting to everlasting…
Determination can only get you so far…but determination didn’t get David through being hunted to singing this lament over the death of Saul…that’s supernatural…that’s the lament of one whose faith is in God alone…
“having faith” isn’t what does it…David could have said, “my dream is to be king, and I just have faith that that’s going to happen”…like the give giving Sionna a car…only faith that’s rightly placed (in God!) will be consequential in our lives and in the lives of others around us…the kind of faith that can say in the midst of being hunted down “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.”
God is not distant and disconnected…He knew what David’s anointing as king and Saul’s jealously would look like for David…He knew there would be times of great difficulty for David…
What God is doing is bigger than just me, bigger than what I can see…1 Peter1:6-7 (in this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith – more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire – may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ) testing and trials are necessary and purposeful…could it be that God knew Israel would need a king that had intimate, experiential knowledge of God’s faithfulness??
When we are dealing with tough situations or people, etc., having a big and right view of God reminds us that we aren’t at the mercy of the person or situation, but God alone is in charge…don’t look at the nature of the situation, look at the nature of the One who is with us…
