Mise en scene of pyschological and stalker horror trailers
1. Mise en scene of pyschological and
stalker horror film trailers
2. The Circle
Setting
The setting is based around a campus
type office area with lecture/show
scenes.
This makes the people feel safe and feel
supported when they are being watched
and analysed where ever they go.
They are aware of themselves being
recorded and that provides them with a
sense of security.
There is also a sense of people’s privacy
being invaded as anyone can record and
share the footage at anytime with the
new up to date technology. The privacy
of the individuals are invaded as more
and more people are aware of the
programme and join in recording certain
characters.
It is shown nearer to the end of the
trailer that there is more to the recording
of people as they say and it becomes
very dangerous.
3. The Circle
Lighting
The lighting in the beginning work space is very
dark. This represents it being quite dull and boring to
be sitting in the box space and the group of
colleagues are together but they are separated from
each other by the walls of their blocks, this
represents a physicals and mental barrier and
making the people quite lonely.
The lighting through a lot of the trailer is shown to be
daylight either when shown outside or through the
windows in the new working space. This suggests
that everyone on the campus is open to each other
and there is no secrets between one another.
The lighting in the theatre shows a spotlight directly
on the characters on the stage. This represents the
intensity and pressure on the people on stage as the
characters are not only shown under the spotlight on
stage but they are being watched all the time as
they carry cameras on them, live streaming,
everywhere they go. This also suggests there is
always one key individual that has all eyes on them
whether it be through thousands of audience’s eyes
or a camera’s lens view.
4. The Circle
Facial expressions/ Body language
The facial expressions vary throughout the
clip. The girl’s emotions (Emma Watson) are
played with as she is in shock and
excitement about getting the job.
Then she is really happy to be working
where she is and it shows a very positive
bright side, but then it turns over when she
finds out what the company actually does
and she grows to fear them in a great extent.
She is shown very vulnerable as she
becomes apart of the programme and
feelings like it is the best for her.
The trailer shows a positive and strong
powered women get trapped in amongst her
worst nightmare.
5. The Circle
Costume/ Hair & Makeup
The clothing worn is very casual and relaxed, not very
professional making the jobs they have look very laid
back. This suggests that they may have not been
professionally trained and could be learning in more of
a study environment where they learn as they work.
Their clothing is suited for all jobs they do as they
work at desk and also do activities at social events.
Props
The props found in the trailer are very modernised.
Throughout the clip ‘Apple’ products are used. This
shows there is a lot of money within the
programme. This also shows that the film is very
up to date as the technology is modernised.

7. Split
Setting
The setting is based in an underground
basement.
The girls are originally taken from a car
in a parked area. This gives a sense of
their vulnerability as they are not safe
anywhere they are and anyone could
get in the car if they are not careful.
They are taken away from everything
and placed in a dark environment where
they are controlled by one being with
many personalities.
The underground setting suggests they
are so far from everyday life and that
they are no longer able to function the
same way and feel safe was they would
in their own home.
8. Split
Lighting
The lighting in the beginning goes from being
bright and nice in the sunlight outside to a dull
dark lighting in an underground basement where
the girls can not get to see natural light for a long
time. The normal daylight shows a sunny day
down by the supermarket. This sets a normal
everyday event.
The lack of natural lighting represents them being
trapped and no one knowing where they are.
The absence of lighting makes the mood seem
daunting as the girls are unaware of who they will
face next and what can happen to them.
9. Split
Facial expressions/ Body language
The facial expressions vary throughout as the
character it is shown that he (the killer) has 23
distinct personalities. In the trailer three of them
are shown. A young nine year old boy, a strong
smart man and a feminine women.
The facial expressions and voice change are key
indicators that the character has changed
personalities.
The facial expressions shown by the boy are very
childish and intrigued in conversation and he
gets upset quickly as he has been told off before
ad is worried to be told off again.
When the actor takes the role of the feminine
women, he relaxes his shoulders and stands up
straight with his neck full extended, this helps him
look more lady-like. Whereas when he plays the
young boy for example, the body language is
very relaxed and laid back.
10. Split
Costume/ Hair & Makeup
The clothing worn varies through out the trailer as each
personality has their own individual style.
The costumes is the key indicator of when the character
is changing personality.
Depending on the costume worn, it makes you aware of
what personality is being shown before the dialogue
begins. This helps the audience to witness the change
in personality and understand the roles of each one
better.
Props
The props found in the trailer are shown to have
some everyday items such as shopping bags and
building tools and a pet, hamster.
Some props are not as usual as you would find, there
was a spray and mask used by the antagonist in the
car scene to put the girls to sleep so he was able to
take the girls without a struggle. This suggests that he
had his plan well thought out and that the girls were
his target.

12. Gone Girl
Setting
The setting is based in a town. This
shows that the people live very close
together. This suggests everyone knows
everyone’s business, there are no
secrets to be told. This also means that
if one person believes something, a lot
more people will too.
A lot of the scenes in the trailer are shot
in a house. This makes the audience
feel that the home isn't a safe place to
be in anymore as everywhere is under
investigation.
13. Gone Girl
Lighting
The lighting throughout the trailer is dull and
dark. The three main sources of light used are;
daylight, house and office lighting and camera
lighting.
This creates the mood of a dull neighbourhood
and that there is rarely anything happening in
the town so when there is something it is
broadcasted long and wide for the nation to
know about it.
There is a lot of daylight shown. This suggests
that people searched day and night to find
‘Amy’. This also shows how she was a
significant character as the town was looking
for her.
The indoor lighting was a very dull yellow also
setting the mood as being sad and a lot of the
time, on edge.
14. Gone Girl
Facial expressions/ Body language
The facial expressions vary throughout
between both the main male and female
characters.
In the trailer, the girl is shown as being very
happy and enjoying herself, to then being
fearful and scare.
The girl also shows anger and aggression as
she physically starts fighting with the male
character. Both characters show a positive
and negative side to their personalities in the
trailer, this is shown to make the audience
question who the antagonist really is.
The male’s facial expressions show curiosity
and concern throughout the trailer. This
makes you feel sympathy towards him as his
wife means a lot to him.
15. Gone Girl
Costume/ Hair & Makeup
The clothing worn is set in the 20th century
showing everyday clothing from ‘being at
home’ wear to uniform work wear.
The costumes are used to show the power
between certain characters, such as when
the police officer is in the scene the male
character is belittled and shown he has no
control over the situation.
Props
The props found in the trailer are from the 20th
century. An electronic monitor is shown out in the city
roads showing a banner for the character that goes
missing, Amy.
You can also see in grimes of the scenes shown in
the bedrooms that there is electronics such as
telephones that are wireless which sets what kind of
era they could be in.
The lighting used for the main characters interview
was a modern set of studio lights.
