The document discusses choosing a color scheme for a magazine focused on the North East region of England. It analyzes the colors commonly associated with Newcastle, Sunderland, and Durham. Newcastle is associated with black and white, Sunderland with red and black, and Durham with blue and green. The author decides on a final color scheme of black, white, grey, blue, and red to represent the whole region and appeal to the largest audience. This scheme incorporates colors from each city while providing contrast to draw attention.
2. Regional Colours
When making my magazine, I must consider that it is regional and
therefore ensure it represents the region whilst still attracting the public.
For this reason, I have decided to look in to the different colours that are
associated with or represent the North East to see if I could find a
common colour/colours that would create a good colour scheme. The
places that I am going to focus my research on are: Newcastle,
Sunderland and Durham as these are the three major cities that equate
to the North East and have the largest population. I feel that by using
colour association in my magazine, it will be easier to attract my target
audience and help to not limit my magazine by only representing
certain parts of the North East. In turn this will allow me to access the
largest audience possible.
3. Sunderland
Typically, Sunderland is heavily associated with the colours red and white due to the city’s
football strips. In addition to this, the football club is subsequently connected to the colour
black due to the teams adopted nick name- The Black Cats.
Bellow is a screenshot of the first images that appear when typing “Sunderland” into google.
As you can see the page primarily consists of the colours black, white and red. In addition
to these colours, the colour blue also appears due to the locations in the area such as the
Tyne river and the seaside; both prevalent landmarks/locations for the area.
4. Newcastle
Typically, Newcastle is heavily associated with the colours black and white due to the city’s
football strips and the football club’s adopted nick name- The Magpies
Bellow is a screenshot of the first images that appear when typing “Newcastle” into google.
As you can see the page primarily consists of the colours black and white. In addition to
these colours, the colour blue also appears due to the river and the landscape surrounding
it such as: the swing bridge and millennium bridge.
5. Durham
Durham isn’t as heavily associated with football as the two previous cities however
does still have a team who's colours are: blue and red. Durham is more well known for
cricket and therefore associated with the teams colours- blue and yellow.
Bellow is a screenshot of the first images that appear when typing “Durham” into
google. As you can see the page primarily consists of the colours blue and green.
Durham is more picturesque as it contains castles, cathedrals and rivers making its
colour scheme a lot more nature based.
6. For my products, I have decided to keep a simplistic and minimalistic
colour scheme as I believe that this will help broadcast and brand my
magazine as contemporary and professional. Further reasoning
behind making this the main proportion of the colour scheme is that
it allows me to incorporate any colour with them without the colours
clashing. I like the simplicity of the contrasting black and white
however in order to prevent a harsh contrast, I am going to
incorporate shades of grey to create colour scheme with a gradient
and therefore make the products look well put together and flow. I
plan on using an additional one or two contrasting bright colours to
the colour scheme in order to emphasise certain aspects of the
products and attract my target audience. Throughout the rest of this
presentation I will be exploring the different colour/ colours I will
incorporate with the monochrome colour scheme.
7. Additional Colour/Colours
Blues GreensReds Purples
These are the colours that I was
considering to incorporate into
my monochrome colour scheme. I
think that the reds and blues are
the more eye catching colours
and appealing out of the four. My
plan is to have only one main
colour scheme for all aspects of
my products to create continuity
and synergy rather than having a
different colour represent a
different sub-genre of my
magazine.

8. Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
• The colour blue appears in all of the three
main cities colours and therefore is
representative of the region.
• The blue tones have connotations of
relaxation and maturity and therefore
would give the magazine a professional
look.
• It matches well with the black, white and
grey.
Weaknesses
• It is considered a male colour and
therefore may not effectively attract both
sides of my target audience.
Strengths
• The colour red represents Sunderland
effectively therefore makes the magazine
seem regional.
• It is a bright and bold colour so will
attract attention to the products.
• Red connotes danger and warning which
will naturally draw attention. It is also a
uni-sex colour.
Weaknesses
• This colour scheme doesn’t represent all
of the region as Durham doesn’t include
the colours red, black and white.
For my colour scheme I have decided to combine these to colour schemes in order to obtain the best
of both. By doing this I think that I will attract the most of region and therefore target audience.
9. Final Colour Scheme
I have decided to have my final colour scheme incorporate the colours: black,
white, grey, blue and red as these are the colours that continually popped up
during my research into the region. I think that the red and blue work well
with each whilst still contrasting enough so that they will allow aspects of my
products to stand out. I feel by incorporating both colours, I have ensue that I
haven’t missed out an area in my region and therefore have ensured that I
can engage with the most target audience member as possible. In addition to
this, these colours are considered uni-sex meaning that the magazine will not
attract one specific gender upon first glance.
