By RUDAMENTAL ft. ELLA EYRE
The song very much contrasts the lyrics, as the lyrics repeat the need to
be wanted and needed. However the song is about a man who had a
biking injury and he is needed and wanted as it appears his friends are
with him the whole time. However we could argue that the lyrics are
coming from the bike. We know that eventually he starts to bike again,
and the song is about him being needed by his passion of biking.
In the hospital it is clear that the lyrics could be from the protagonists
POV in the hospital bed, and wants to be needed and wanted by his
friends. The idea that they stay with him till the end reinforces the
positive vibe from this genre and music, generally overcoming a
difficult situation
At the beginning, the word want repeats itself multiple times as the we see a close up
shot of the protagonists face crying. The repetition could be symbolic for the healing
process being repetitive and painful. This reinforces the narrative theory by Todorov,
who suggests in every story there is a disruption. We notice from a close up of the
protagonist, that the audience would empathise with him because he's crying as he's
found out that he had to have a leg amputated. Close ups usually show the emotion
and feelings and this is effective to the narrative of the video
However when the music increases in volume and the chorus starts we see the
protagonist gradually start to pick himself according the volume of the music.
At the beginning there is a diegetic sound before the song of a bike wheel spinning that
goes into the start of the song. This indicates to the audience that the song is going to
be about his recovery after the collision with the vehicle. Also, before the music video
starts, there are the sounds of the busy streets, car horns, the bikes grinding across
poles and the men talking. Until the accident happens and then there is the sound of
screeching tires and the sound of the bike and the man colliding with the lorry.
We generally see how the music video reinforces the average house/dance music
video. The protagonist usually finds himself in a difficult situation, and through the
music and the lyrics they pick themselves up into positive vibes, usually dancing.
On the first chorus, we see one of his friends write bike references on the glass then get
told off. This shows us there positive attitude towards things, and there mischievous
but funny personalities. there is the protagonist going to a club for the first time since
he lost his legs. The lighting in the club is dark with disco lights coming off, which
then proceed to see a close up mid shot of him kiss someone, showing the positive side
of a negative situation.
Most of the music video consists of the bikers' own videos of their adventures. This lets
the audience feel empathy for the protagonist because they know the accident was
real and the video is to get the message across that even if the worst happens to you,
you can still achieve your dream. In the YouTube description of the music video it says
that all the characters are real friends of Kurt, furthermore letting the audience know
about how real the video is. This is typical of a house/dance genre music video, as
they always release positive messages and give people hope
The notion of looking is key to the music video, as it
adds to the realism of the narrative. It allows us as the
audience to see the genuine story of someone losing
there legs through a passion, and working hard to do
this passion again. It also allows us to see all of the
characters personalities when they're smiling into the
camera. From this we gather a verisimilitude feel from
the use of notion looking.
It lacks the elements of a generic pop genre music video or a
demand of record labels. A lot of the characters in the music
video have tattoos, which is a normal element of a rock
music video however this is very different. Again this differs
from Goodwin's theory meaning that it does not always apply to
every pop music video. The costume of the characters are casual
clothing, showing this is real life and not staged. This is effective
as the producers are filming a real event to grab the audiences
attention and show the complete emotional journey the
protagonist has to go through the pick himself up. It links well
with the positive dance music as bit by bit the protagonist relives
his old life of biking.
The colour that appears the most in the music video is blue. Blue is a signifier of
calm, relaxing and chill. This shows that in the music video, along with all the dark
colours and sepia scheme, there's some relaxation in the story.
There is a mise en scene that represents a down to earth vibe through out, this is shown with all
the shots of them biking everywhere, manmade ramps, houses that are not posh and plush, the
element of smoking and wearing plain, unbranded clothing which shows that they are not rich.
The video also seems to be set in suburban California or in America somewhere, as there are
glimpses of palm trees, clear skies and lovely calm beaches, which allow us as the audience to feel
calm in a heated situation through out the video, we feel, (as the audience), a very real video that
will affect our emotions. Prior to this there is shaky filming, sharp panning and blurry zooming
in. At the beginning of the film, the camera is mostly focused on the bikers legs in action as they
cycle through the traffic, this is a kind of foreshadowing, as the main character loses his leg. There
is also a lot of real life footage, like the crash, which is filmed with a GoPro to capture the fast
speed and the tricks whilst the bikers are cycling over the ramps. This is what was being used
when the accident was filmed and there was a lot of close ups involved of all the friends waiting
in hospital, this was to show the worry and concern on their faces. There was then a medium shot
used to show what damage was done to the mans leg, as there was a shot of him in bed with the
half of his leg all bandaged up. During the mans recovery, there are a lot of group shots that
involve the man in his wheelchair, he looks quite isolated as he is on a lower level compared to
everyone else and he is surrounded by people doing his hobby that he can no longer do
In this particular music video, there is a clear narrative as the
majority of the video is of the protagonist overcoming a life changing
injury. We could argue that the story being told in the video is heart-
breaking, as we experience the difficulties he has to overcome in
healing, and see his pain when he breaks out into tears. The
protagonist improves his life through every chorus, until he can
eventually walk and ride his bike again. The narrative is extra
sentimental, as through research I have found out it is a true story.
This video’s preferred reading is narrative based rather than
performance, and has a purpose to the audience of overcoming
difficult situations. We could argue that there is a high contrast
between the upsetting story and the upbeat music. However, it
works as the upbeat music almost allows us to believe in him in and
almost motivate ourselves in our personal difficult situations.
Because the narrative of the music is true,
there are no intertextual references, besides
the use of the famous bike brand BMX,
which is used by all of the characters,
which could link to the demand a record
label.
Equilibrium: The equilibrium is the first 33 seconds before the non diegetic music
starts, when the protagonist and his friends are riding there bikes, joking around and
swearing at the GoPro camera. This is important as it shows the personality of the characters
before the disruption. This was the life the protagonist lived before his accident.
Disruption: The clear disruption is when the protagonist rides in front of a white van .
The music then starts as his journey starts, and the main disruption of this incident was the
loss of his legs. This meant he was unable to fulfil his passion of bike riding.
Recognition of Disruption: The recognition of disruption was when he started
to cry in the hospital bed. At this point he realises that he probably wont ever be able to walk
ever again.
Attempt to Repair Disruption: The protagonist attempts to repair his
disruption on every chorus by the help of his friends, who help him relive his old lifestyle
and by having therapy at the hospital and learning to use a prophetic leg. This allows him to
live the new equilibrium.
New Equilibrium: The new equilibrium is the protagonist at the end riding
his bike like he was at the begging with his friends, and attempting to perform
bike tricks. It is similar as the original equilibrium,, but instead of his legs he has
prophetic legs.
Hero- The hero is clearly the main protagonist, who loses his legs and
overcomes his difficult situation.
Villain- The Villain isn’t very clear in this music video. However we
acknowledge that it was the van that caused all the disruption, therefore
we see this as the villain
Donor- The donor within the music video is definitely the nurse and
doctors which helped him recover.
Helper- The helper or helpers are his friends who are with him
throughout the whole process. They try and help him
Princess- The Princess, much like the van, is his bike which he aspires to
ride throughout the whole of his recovery.
False Hero- There isnt really a false hero in this music video.
Strauss’ binary opposites theory can be applied to
this music video. Firstly we could apply it to the
nurses who abide by the rules in contrast to the
protagonist who doesn’t follow the rules. General
rules in society contrast the protagonist as he
wishes to ride around and potentially break the
rules just to have fun.
