5. About ACAD 1100
COURSE DESCRIPTION
ACAD 1100 is a freshman seminar course that
provides skills for success in college and beyond.
This three credit-hour course has been specifically
designed to assist first year students in making the
transition to higher education by introducing them
to the academic and social expectations and
opportunities provided by the university.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
As a result of completing ACAD 1100, students will be able
to:
•Express confidence in their ability to navigate university
systems including resources, technology, policies and
procedures.
•Explore and assess personal capabilities and limitations
regarding major and career goals, personality, values,
academic strengths and learning styles.
•Examine issues from multiple perspectives and develop an
ability to think critically.
•Identify university expectations for college-level reading,
writing and speaking and their connection to the learning
process.
•Acquire and implement lifetime skills necessary for
personal and professional development.
•Recognize, respect and value that individuals have
different experiences, perspectives, abilities, values,
interests and beliefs.
•Establish a meaningful connection to the university
community and beyond.

Introduction of groups- Place students in groups based on their candy choice Red - Favorite hobbies • Green - Favorite place on earth • Blue - Favorite memory • Yellow -Dream job • Orange - Wildcard (tell us anything about yourself!) Students will get to know each other based on the candy and color they chose. 15 minute exercise.
Talk about classroom expectations: Showing up on time (10 minutes late is considered absent…doors will be locked) Missing class (2 forgiven absences, Must not be consecutive, doctors excuses) Assignments (All assignments due on Saturdays by 11:59 PM) (Late Assignments will be deducted at 5 points per day)
