❖ From the word itself “progress” which means
forward/change.
❖ It is a believe that individuality, progress, and
change are fundamental to one's education.
❖ Believing that people learn best from what they
consider most relevant to their lives
❖ It centers the curricula on the needs,
experiences, interests, and abilities of students.
4. Proponent of Progressivism
JOHN DEWEY (1859-1952)
❖ He is the proponent of progressivism,
which he based on Pragmatism.
❖ Pragmatism is an educational philosophy
that says that education should be about
life and growth. That is, teachers should
be teaching students things that are
practical for life and encourage them to
grow into better people.
5. Goals of Progressivism
❖ Aims to produce students that are intelligent problem
solvers.
❖ To mold students to develop sense of social awareness.
❖ Aims to establish sense of learning through experiences.
❖ To be able to prepare students toward the changing world.
❖ Education as a whole which includes the physical,
emotional, social, and intellectual aspects of an individual.
6. Concept of Progressivism
❖ Dewy believed that school is a miniature democratic
society, in which students could learn and practice the
skills and tools necessary for democratic republic.
❖ Centers the idea of contemporary reforms and
movements in terms of educational, social, and political
affairs.
7. Progressivism and the Curriculum
❖ Should be based on the actual environment of the child.
❖ Should be interdisciplinary in nature.
❖ Books and the subject matter were part of the learning
process rather than source of ultimate knowledge.
❖ The curriculum should be based on student’s interest and
application of human problems and circumstances.

environment.
✓ Teacher role is to guide and facilitate, which means not
required to expert in the said field of specializations or
subjects.
