How to use a study guide

Study Guide Tips
When given a study guide to review for an assessment, use a color coding system to help you
prioritize and manage your study sessions. Choose your own color system or use the one below!
Step 1: GET ALL STUDY MATERIALS READY (class notes, laptop, pen, colored markers).
Step 2: Skim/Survey the study guide and color code the concepts and/or guiding
questions using the coding system.
Step 3: Meet with your teacher during Flex/Tutorial to get clarification for any RED
codes before creating your study tool.
Step 4: Create your study tool (flashcards, Quizlet, practice test, Kahoot, etc.)
Step 5: Work with your study partner and start studying!
Quiz = 2-3 - 30 min study sessions
Test = 4-5 – 30 min study sessions
Color Code
RED
• ALERT! Use a red color to note when you do not understand the
material and need clarification.
• Make sure to meet with teacher ASAP during Flex or Tutorial and
get clarification so you have accurate answers to study.
• Prioritize and review the material several times to retain
information
Color Code
YELLOW
• WARNING! Use a yellow color to note when you are unsure
of the information and/or can’t complete or explain the
concepts or guiding questions.
• Make sure to meet with your teacher ASAP during Flex or
Tutorial and double check for accuracy. Don’t study the
wrong things!
Color Code
GREEN
• I KNOW IT! Use a green color to note when you are confident
and understand the information.
• This means the concepts and/or guiding questions can be easily
recalled, explained and/or summarized.
• Review these concepts during study sessions but spend the
majority of your study session on Yellow and Red color codes.
