2. What is Educational Therapy?
Educational Therapy is an educational intervention that evaluates, defines and
addresses an individual’s pattern of learning strengths and deficiencies. It’s the practice
of providing individualized research-based remedial and compensatory learning
strategies to enhance students’learning and academic outcomes. Self-advocacy skills
are taught throughout the process.
Educational Therapy vs. Tutoring
Tutoring focuses on re-teaching academic subjects. This can be beneficial for students
who are behind, need a little extra support to keep up, or have specific needs in
particular subjects and who want to get ahead.
Educational Therapy addresses underlying causes of learning challenges and
remediates these causes using scientifically-proven and research-based methods such
as diagnostic teaching. Weak processing skills are identified and addressed.
Tutoring is product oriented and focuses on content, while educational therapy is more
process oriented focusing on how we receive, process, and express new information.
