10. REPRESENTATION
ETHNIC IDENTITY;
In our short movie most characters are of afro-Caribbean or non-European background .for
our genre and theme of crime/thriller gangster ,a stereotypical ethnic identity is Italian
American characters. Having black characters they are represented as typical black youths
because they are involved in crime but also challenge their typical ethnic identity because
character Christopher takes his job very seriously representing black ethnic identity as hard
working and determined .
GENDER REPRESENTATION;
Through out the short movie there is only one female character and we see her as playful
,sweet and girly fulfilling the ‘traditional’ female gender identity .But when her true identity
is revealed as being a big boss she fragments the typical female identity and is represented
as powerful ,authoritive and corrupt.
The male gender identity from main characters :Lucas Stone is represented as untypically
oblivious ,infatuated with girls and easily distracted .whereas Chris Hardy is represented as
serious strong and focused ,fulfilling the typical male representation. The Boss of Lucas and
Christopher is represented as dominant ,mysterious and forceful
11. CHARACTERS
• ZHANE: Sexy, manipulative, cunning, ambitious, wears long dark coats, heels or boots, girly
but chic (sheek) style. She is either black or mixed race.
• LUCAS STONEY: Handsome, never on time, adolescent male, sexually driven, show-off,
wears all black and casual formal. He is black
• CHRISTOPHER HARDY: Good looking, determined, good character, punctual, intelligent,
more about his money, wears all black and casual formal. He is black
12. MORE CHARACTERS…
• BOSS: Aggressive, Domineering, short-tempered,
deep voice, wears gold chains and gold watches.
Maybe has grills too. Skin colour/ethnicity, not yet
specified.
• VICTIM: looks like an addict, skinny, looks beaten up,
rough, wrapped up, not wearing a top. (under
assumption that he has been stripped) ethnicity
unspecified
• ZHANE’S SIDE KICK: dumb, well trained in combat,
submissive, wears a balaclava, hoody and tracksuit
13. HOW THE FILM WILL LOOK: MISE-EN-SCENE
SETTING AND PROPS – This is set on the streets of London; dark setting/midday. Our
scene starts with a murder so we will have guns, there is a victim tied up so we will have rope. We
will have a replica of the goods; maybe something that looks like a drug package.
COSTUME, MAKEUP –Stone and Hardy will be dressed in casually smart all black
costume. This is because we want them to look sophisticated, furthermore, creating the illusion
that they are trying to look legit, so that they don’t get approached by the police.
The boss (whom we’ll only see the mouth and shoulders of) will have a full grown beard, wear
grills (foil or chewing gum wrappers can be used for this), rings and a lot of jewellery, to
represent his wealth and power. Zhane will have dark long
hair, and a dark Smokey eye look. This can be achieved with eye shadow, to recreate a villainous
look. But seeing as we do not want to completely give away her character at first, a nude pink
lipstick will be used to make her come across as sweet.
FACIAL EXPRESSION/BODY LANGUAGE – at first Stone and Hardy have a relaxed
body language, playful faces, however when they get to the boss, they show through facial
expression that they are serious and are tense, when they see the dead body at the beginning.
During Stone’s date, he looks in love and oblivious to reality. Hardy who is waiting, looks anxious
and impatient. He is wearing a frown. Zhane will always walk as if she hold power. Whenever she
smiles it will be a smirk, however she will always behave innocently by playing with her hair.
LIGHTING – We’ve chosen to have a monotonic lighting throughout the film, and we’ll be
filming indoors and out-doors we aim to preserve this type of lighting by filming in the evenings
of winter, where there is a fair amount of light but it’s still dark, and in doors using a low-key high
contrast.
14. EDITING STYLES
• Jump cuts in fighting and shooting scenes. This is to create
tension and make the scene look fast paced making the
audience feel adrenaline
• dissolve edits to establish the change in the time.
• Straight cuts for when the boys are heading together to their
EDITING
boss.
• Fade in/out to represent a character who has lost
consciousness, making the audience restricted in the story
which creates tense atmosphere
• Possibly split screen, to show that Stone is with Zhane,
ignoring his calls, and the Hardy is on his own, waiting for
15. CINEMATOGRAPHY
MEDIUM SHOTS –To show whose talking and to express emotion (reverse shot)
CLOSE UP – To show the significance of objects (e.g. phone put on silent,
merchandise/money and watch)
FOCUS PUSH –To reveal something (e.g. the boss talking and revealing someone tied up)
LONG SHOTS- Establish locations & to represent someone as small and helpless (e.g. Hardy
is watching time pass)
LOW ANGLE SHOT- represent power, strength, superior etc. (e.g. the men beating up Hardy
& boss)
POV- represent running as fast paced, busy and panic
ARC –To reveal Zhane is the traitor and a boss of her own gang
16. HOW ARE FILM WILL SOUND;
Diegetic sound: Dialogue, cars driving by ,phone ringtone
(contrapuntal music – during the murder a contrasting ringtone
plays).
Non-diegetic: Gunshots, heart beat , background music (parallel music
– to depict the genre).
17. INFLUENTIAL POSTERS TYPICAL OF
GENRE;
In the thriller and action posters we found
that black and red were the main colours
used. This is because red signifies blood
and rage, where as black connotes death,
darkness, and mystery.
Blue is also used and this represents fear
and loneliness.
Many of the poster had central close up shots of
villainous or heroic characters. This represents
their fearlessness and bravery. They can also be
perceived as targets.
18. For ‘Deception’ we plan on creating a
poster similar to the typical action-thriller
posters, in order to reinforce
tension and appeal to a suspicion
thirsty audience.
Our poster must have the two main
characters, Lucas Stone and
Christopher Hardy holding guns to
show that they are the two main
characters. And either the big boss
or Zhane the poster.
Upon choosing our decision, thought
it may be better to not put the girl in
the poster as the audience would
know that she is very significant.
And we don’t want to give to much
