The opening title sequence of ‘Dexter’ is a chilling and informative piece that lasts one
minute and thirty-six seconds it consists also f different angle shots. Having the different
angles within ‘Dexter’ creates an eerie and questionable atmosphere that can keep the
audience intrigued and essentially wanting more. Although the Opening sequence is short, it
divulges in to different shots of his morning routine these shots however can be interpreted
in different ways. The way in which I have interpreted the opening of ‘Dexter’ is that he slyly
demonstrates the different ways in which you can kill/ murder someone through his daily
actions. This suggested to me that the character and the story that is up and
coming isn’t innocent and a deeper meaning should be applied. Likewise, as the
title is wrote in blood it insinuates and supports my
interpretation of the title sequence. By the title being
wrote and dripping with blood it attracts the audience to
carry on watching as we do not know where the blood is
from and therefore will want to find out.
Name filled with
blood insinuates he is
full of anger and
wants his vengeance
Drops of Blood,
can suggest injury,
maybe death,
anger and revenge.
An example of this would be shot 1:23, it
shows the main character Dexter putting on his T-shirt slowly and holding it tight to his face
for a short amount of time. This can simply be interpreted in this straight forward way,
although, adding meaning to the short shot it could be envisioned as a method of murder. By
the main character holding his T-shirt over his face for a longer
time than usual, helps encourage and emphasises the idea of
the method of suffocation (method of murder). Also in reality a
person wouldn’t hold any piece of clothing so close to their face,
this then also supports that the opening sequence has more
meaning to it than it looks. (Example)
Holding the Fabric tight to
the face suggests the
method of suffocation.
Name filled with blood could mean
the main character has been through
large amounts of pain.
Seeing the imprints of
the nose and mouth
shows how tight the
fabric is being pushed
of the face.
