Parts of the sun
Photosphere
Chromosphere
Sunspot
Corona
Core
 Photosphere- not a solid surface
but is actually a layer about 100 km
thick (very, very, thin compared to
the 700,000 km radius of the Sun)
 Chromosphere - is usually too weak
to be seen against the brighter
photosphere. The third layer of
the sun's atmosphere is the corona. It
can only be seen during a total solar
eclipse as well
Sunspot- Sunspots are darker, cooler
areas on the surface of the sun in a
region called the photosphere,
Sunspots have temperatures of about
3,800 degrees K. They look dark only
in comparison with the brighter and
hotter regions of the photosphere
around them.
 Corona-A corona (Latin, 'crown') is
an aura of plasma that surrounds
the Sun and other celestial bodies.
Outer part of the sun (atmosphere)
Core-Sun's core has a very high
temperature, more than 15 million
degrees Kelvin, and the material in
the core is very tightly packed or
dense. It is a combination of these
two properties that creates an
environment just right for nuclear
reactions to occur.

The sun is a star. A star does not
have a solid surface, but is a ball
of gas (92.1 percent hydrogen (H2)
and 7.8 percent helium (He) held
together by its own gravity.
The sun is made up of light gasses
The sun is the center of our solar
system and makes up 99.8% of the
mass of the entire solar system.
If the sun were as tall as a typical
front door, Earth would be about
the size of a nickel
Since the sun is not a solid body,
different parts of the sun rotate at
different rates. At the equator, the
sun spins once about every 25
Earth days, but at its poles the sun
rotates once on its axis every 36
days.
The solar atmosphere is where we
see features such as sunspots and
solar flares on the sun. The sun's
outer atmosphere -- the corona --
extends beyond the orbit of dwarf-
planet Pluto.
Has sphere of hot gas
It is orbited by eight planets, at least
five dwarf planets, tens of thousands
of asteroids, and hundreds of
thousands to three trillion comets and
icy bodies.
The sun does not have any rings.
The temperature at the sun's core is
about 15 million degrees Celsius (27
million degrees Fahrenheit).
Did you know?
 Energy is created in the core when hydrogen is
fused to helium. This energy flows out from
the core by radiation through the radiative
layer, by convection through the convective
layer, and by radiation from the surface of the
photosphere, which is the portion of the Sun
we see.
Distance to Earth: 92,960,000
miles (149,600,000 kilometers)
Surface temperature: 5,778 K
Mass/Size: 1.989E30 kg
Radius: 695,800 km (1 R☉)
Magnitude: -26.74
Orbits: Galactic Center
Chemical composition:
Hydrogen 92.1%, Helium
7.8%, Rest of the other 90
naturally occurring elements:
0.1%
Importance
The sun is very important to us
on Earth if without Sun's heat
and light, the Earth would be a
lifeless ball of ice-coated rock.]
And the Sun warms our seas, stirs
our atmosphere, generates our
weather patterns, and gives energy
to the growing green plants that
provide the food and oxygen for
life on Earth.
Rol
eSun’s role is to warms our
seas, stirs our atmosphere,
generates our weather patterns,
and gives energy to the growing
green plants that provide the
food and oxygen for life on
Earth.
