3. SGN offer Help to Heat because we want to make a
Positive impact
5. 17,000 people in the UK died last winter
due to cold housing
The need
15 February 2019
On Fuel Poverty Awareness
Day, E3G and NEA revealed
there were over 17,000
deaths due to cold housing
conditions last winter and
almost twice as many people
died compared to the previous
winter and highest since 1976
2019 Annual Fuel Poverty
Statistics report from BEIS
suggests households without
mains gas are actually twice as
likely to be in fuel poverty.
6. Helping to
address fuel
poverty
• Our Help to Heat gas connections
provide significant benefit to fuel
poor households, so we are working
hard to maximise those connections
• Our Central Heating Grant Fund can
make the difference when working
with partners who have limited
funding for installing central heating
systems
• We also refer householders to
additional help that will improve
energy efficiency and reduce their
bills
Funded support
7. Overview of the Help to Heat Scheme
• SGN branding for Fuel Poor Network Extension
Scheme (FPNES)
• Each network is set a target number of
connections – 10,367 in SGNs Southern
Network
• Connections must be completed by March
2021
• Each Help to Heat connection receives a
voucher for up to £2,658.86 towards the cost
– usually making a connection free of charge
8. Testimonial
Thank you Arun Council for this.
You don’t know how much this
has improved my quality of life.
As a disabled person I really
suffered with the cold and this
install has changed my whole life
and made it better.
Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Mrs F
Arun council has access to the
SGN Central Heating Grant Fund
and we are providing Help to
Heat connections to eligible
Arun residents, like Mrs F.

9. Gas versus electricity for heating – Busting
the myths
Current cost to customers
• Gas: 4.3 pence per kWh
• Electricity: 17.8 pence per kWh
• 75% of household energy use is for space and water heating
• Households without mains gas more than 1.5x as likely to be
fuel poor (17% off gas, 10% on gas – BEIS fuel poverty report)
Typical household consumption (Ofgem figures)
• 12,000kWh gas for heating
• 3,100 kWh electricity
11. Supporting vulnerable customers through
our engineer referral network
Our front line engineers make direct referrals of vulnerable customers
to partner organisations for:
1. Energy efficiency advice
2. Safe and well visit
3. Locking cooker valve
4. Winter appliance repair scheme
5. Priority service register
Emergency careline also available for engineers
Everybody knows energy suppliers, the British Gas and Eons of the world – but many don’t understand who SGN are and how to get on gas…
I’m Marie Jones and I have been working to address fuel poverty as a council officer and now as a manager for SGN.
A little about SGN
17,000 deaths due to cold housing conditions last winter and almost twice as many people died compared to the previous winter. E3G and NEA also confirmed last winter’s excess winter mortality in the UK was the highest since 1976

The cost differential is pretty striking at the moment – here are averages from the big suppliers but the newest British Gas tariff has electricity even higher up at 18p/kWh with gas still down at 4p/kWh.
