3. CREATING CLIMATE RESILIENT HOMES
Better designed,
zero-carbon
housing has
overwhelmingly
positive benefits
through improved
health and
comfort, lower
bills, reduced
emissions and
resilience to a
changing climate.
Achieve Australia’s carbon
reduction targets.
Realise the broader economic
benefits of energy efficiency,
including reduced electricity
network peak demand.
Reduce the health and
safety risk of non-compliant
homes and improve the cost
of living for all Australians.
4. 51% of Australia’s
buildings in 2050
will be built
after 2019.
We risk extending the
legacy of poor
performing homes well
into the next century.

it’s urgent
we act

Renew is taking
the lead and
working with

advocate for
Climate Resilient
Homes.
Leveraging 39

Advocacy. Engage with
government and industry to
make the case for improving
both the compliance with
existing and implementation of
higher performance standards.
Research. Economic modelling
of a range of housing types to
demonstrate optimal energy
efficiency and bill savings for
households.
.
Education. Empower
consumers with independent
information and tools they can
use to ensure new homes are
actually built to minimum
standards.
.
7. We need to galvanise the consumer voice to achieve
better housing for all.
Low consumer awareness of the issues and currently limited,
if any, consumer advocacy.
And yet it’s consumers who pay the price for poor thermal performance.
8. Policy state of play
• No increase to minimum thermal performance standard for houses
since 2010.
• COAG Energy Ministers supported the Trajectory for Low Energy
Homes (reccomendations to NCC 2022) in February 2019.
• COAG Energy Ministers also supported the development of a Trajectory
for Low Energy Homes for existing buildings to go to December 2019
meeting.
• Bulding Ministers Forum support the Trajectory for Low Energy
Buildings’, and request the Australian Building Codes Board to provide
further advice on a holistic review of the energy efficiency provisions in
the NCC 2022
