Blair Witch Trailer analysis-
8. KieranJackson Unit6 Researchtechniques
The Blair witch is a 2016 horror film; the film is sequel to the first Blair witch project, while
watching the trailer there are many things that you look at such as setting, characters,
narrative, iconography and style. The setting in the film is very clear and is the main feature
of the filmwhich is a forest, the forest is where 90% of the film is taken place, from the trailer
most of the film is in the forest which you can also see in the film poster has trees showing it
is within a forest and woods. This setting is a typical setting and location for a horror film,
“found footage in the forest” it makes the audience see that the film has horror gene
conventions. The character in the trailer is also very clear you have the good looking
characters and you can easily identify who people are and you can already predict what will
happen to the characters because the filmhas clear indications of a horror, there are 6 main
character u can see three women and three men, already u can see there will be a final girl
from a scene of a girl alone trapped in a small tunnel so from different main points of nick
lacy. The narrative in trailer isn’t clear and doesn’t show the narrative but different points in
the trailer show us what the narrative might have such as one of the main characters talking
about going back to find his sister and other factors such as the final girl. The other points we
can see I the trailer is the lighting and editing, as the film starts its high key lighting, slow
paced and the characters are happy and excited, but as the trailer goes on and they are in the
setting the lighting is a lot of more dark and dull, it’s much quicker because it’s getting to the
end and you can see I the film more and more people I the group are disappearing. Things
such as these all are a use of anchorage all the conventions are shown to the audience.
The style from the trailer we can clearly see that it’s hand held footage following from the
first Blair which film so we can also see conventions from the first film so it’s also clear it is a
sequel and it’s a horror because most horrors are hand held. The style of this trailer is very
much horror genre because of the hand held footage style, you can also get the horror
conventions from the music, lighting props and content within the trailer. The style is the
Blair witch is “Found Footage”.
There are so many iconography contents within this trailer such as Blood, Darkness,
Abandoned locations, Forests and woods, Red and black colour schemes and abstract editing.

All these different points that are in the trailer show me and the audience it is a horror genre
and the people who like the genre of horror will easily see it’s a horror.
In the trailer there is the use of wooden voodoo sticks, these symbols are used a lot in the
original Blair witch showing the audience that is it a sequel to the first one and also another
genre convention of horror because there are mainly used in a negative and scary way. This
symbol Is also used as the main image in the poster which is just another massive indication
of the genre of horror and also the poster has just this voodoo stick image nothing else
showing us the mystery of the Blaire witch.

Exit Poll Results
For this task I had to create an exit poll for the filmBlair witch which is a new horror filmout
in cinemas now, after a group of people went to see this film I created an Exit poll which is a
questionnaire with questions all about the the film and the person’s individual information,
there was ten questions on the exit poll and I sent the exit poll to 10 people including a
variety of people including men and women, people with different social classes and
different ages so there is a wide range of an audience. I used the software survey monkey
to create and carry out my exit poll, I created ten questions and sent the exit poll to 10
people who went to watch the Blair witch film, I got ten responses and I’m going to
summarise my results and see how different people heard about the filmand the marketing
techniques the producers used the produce the film. I also asked some demographics
questions such as gender, age, occupation and where they live. I did this exit poll because
I wanted to find out what people thought about the filmoverall and how people found out
about the film and to see how the producers marketed the film.
In the first couple of questions I asked some
questions such as what is your gender, age,
your job if they did have a job and where they
lived, the age of response was ages 15-25 and
there was only one response I got that was
from the age group of 35, the age group was
very clearly a teenage/young adult audience
than an older audience, the film age restriction
was a 15 so the producers of the filmwould of
targeted the filmat teenagers and from the
other information I got back from the exit polls
it shows most of the people heard about the
film from social media and teenagers are the
heart of social media.
11. KieranJackson Unit6 Researchtechniques
In this question I just simply asked where people live, I
asked this question because it was a part of people’s
demographics which would help me see how different
people lived and if there were any differences in
different locations about the film, the film Blair witch
has been shown nationally across the UK so there
shouldn’t have been issues with people not being able
to see this film. People from this exit poll live in
Manchester, Swinton and across the greater
Manchester.
I asked a part of demographics the
gender of the person, there wasn’t much
difference but there still was a clear gender
difference between male and female, out of the
ten I sent to carry out the survey 30% were
female and 70% were male, the filmdidn’t have
any aimed gender the film did have male and
female character and wasn’t aimed at any
gender it was for both genders. To make this a
bit more fair make sure the its fairer and ask
more people and make the gender a fair
question. But more male did go and see the film who like horror films.
12. KieranJackson Unit6 Researchtechniques
In this question I asked peoples
favourite filmgenre it was head to head
with horror and comedy, I expect people
who went and saw the Blair witch to have
their favourite as horror but comedy was
the most voted, 30% chose horror,10 %
action, 40% action, 10% SC-fi and 10%
other. From the filmmost people do like
horror as their genre but I would of thought
people would have liked horror more. From
the posters and trailers there isn’t any
indication of a targeted gender but to make
sure the results are fair I would make to
give the questionnaire to 50% male and
50% female so it’s a fair exit poll and I can
the information clearer.
In this question I asked how people
found out about the film, I gave different choices
such as word of mouth, social media, TV adverts,
radio or I added another option if people heard
from a different choice I gave , from the ten people
the most way people heard of the film Blair witch
was from social media which got 54% out of 100
heard the film from social media, 18% was from
word of mouth and 18% from TV adverts, from
these results I can clearly see it is the age what he
produces of the film market the Blair witch film
towards teenagers, the produces use social media
because they know teenagers and young people
enjoy horror and social media is a massive part of
most people’s lives and especially teenagers and
young adults so by from my results I can see that
social media has been a massive use of marketing
used by this film producers.

which was a Turing point is horror history, this also helped the marketing successful.
The Blair witch used different marketing uses such as posters, radio, TV and internet
advertisements, trailers and promotional interviews with the cast. The film is a big thing in the
horror industry I feel the fil, had a successful camping they made people go watch the film from
there uses of marketing it used social media as the main use to promote the film and was
successful.
