The Negative Effects Of Technology
On Today’s Society
What Is Technology?
• Machinery and devices developed from
scientific knowledge.
People Don’t Kill People,
Technology Kills People!
(1) Physical Effects
• It Kills People.
• By Nuclear War:
• In 1945, an estimated 200,000 people Killed as a result of two
atomic bombings in Japan.
• There is also no telling how many nuclear weapons have been
lost, sold to other nations, or simply failed to be accounted
for. All it takes is one person (or hacker) to change the world
forever.
(1) Physical Effects
• Cell Phones:
• Wastage of Time and Money
• Negative Effects On Students
• A Communication Tool For Criminal Purposes
• Negative Effects On Teenagers
• Negative Effects of Mobile Phone Use On Our
Environment
(1) Physical Effects
• Global Warming:
• Oil leaks in the ocean
• Gas guzzling vehicles on the road
• Smoke from the factories
• Unstoppable cutting of tries
• Threat to Ozone layer
(1) Physical Effects
• Pollution:
• Dirty streets
• Smoke from industrialized city
• Dirty water
• Technological waste
(1) Physical Effects
• Genetic Testing:
• Technological advancements in medical
technology are astounding: the amount of
things we have been able to do is quite
impressive. But those same people developing
all these cures could just as easily create a
global pandemic. It is only a matter of time
before a widely used drug turns lethal (or
worse).
(1) Physical Effects
• Machine Takeover:
• We will build robots that will do more than
walk around and dance: they will be created
with the task of helping people with everyday
chores. Eventually, they will do our work for
us. Furthermore, they will grow smarter and
our efforts to make them more human-like
will pay off.
(2) Social Effects
• Isolation
• Isolation means lack of contact with other
people in normal daily living, such as, the
workplace, with friends and in social activities.
We isolate ourselves by walking around in our
own little world, listening to our iPods or staring
at the screen of the latest mobile device even
when we are around other people.
• Studies have shown that people who are
socially isolated will live shorter lives.
(2) Social Effects
• Obesity:
• The more time people are spending time in
video games, talking to friends online and
watching videos on YouTube, they are
spending less time being active or exercising.
• Also the likelihood of mindlessly eating
unhealthy food.
(2) Social Effects
• Depression:
• Technology creates the perfect recipe for
depression with the lack of human contact,
overeating and lack of exercise.
• Some people could cure their depression by
living a healthier lifestyle.
(2) Social Effects
• Poor Sleep Habits:
• We get sucked into online activities that keep
us up too late and the constant stream of
information can make it difficult to turn off
our brains.
• Also, the ambient glow from screens can
affect the release of melatonin, the sleep
chemical.
(2) Social Effects
• Increased Bullying:
• It is also easier to get more kids involved in
bullying because people are more likely to say
things online that they wouldn’t say in person.
• The increase in cyber-bullying has also led to
an increase in teen suicides.
(2) Social Effects
• Lack of Privacy:
• The use of viruses and hacking helps to find any
information they wish to obtain.
• They don’t think twice about tweeting every
move they make, freely giving out their location
on Google Map and putting their entire life story
on Facebook.
• One research found that once you login to
Facebook, they can follow whatever you are
browsing.
(2) Social Effects
• Addiction:
• Studies have shown that when cell phones are
taken away subjects heard or felt fathom
vibrations, continuously reached for phones
that weren’t there and became restless. These
are some of the same withdrawal symptoms
you would expect from doing drugs.
Survey On Technology Use
• Are advances in today’s technology necessary?
• No = 20%
• Yes = 80%
Survey On Technology Use
• Are social network necessary??
• No = 36%
• Yes = 64%
