What is Electro-Pop?
Electro-Pop is a subgenre that combines electronic music and pop music
and has seen a revival of popularity since the 1980s, all the way to the
2010s. It is characterized by a distinctive low frequency synthesizer
sound (described as crisp, crunchy, crackly, fuzzy, warm and distorted).
An example of an electro-pop songs:
1. La Roux – Bulletproof
2. Lady Gaga – Poker Face
3. Lorde – Green Light

Unlike the majority of pop artists, through the use of video,
audio and lyrics, Electro-Pop artists targets a niche audience.
This gives the musical outcome a more alternative aspect to it,
making it successful within that genre field. People who are
interested in art, media and culture and whose style is
alternative would gear towards electro-pop more because it’s
less mainstream.
Concept/Meaning
- To create a new version/sense of reality
- More focused on the emotional artistic style
- Uses concepts and narratives in order to promote the artist
rather than the performance
- Based around social-realism with a twist of abstract or
metaphorical shots to emphasize emotion

- Florescent/strobe lighting to reflect nature of the

- Neon, artificial lighting and colour
- Occasionally soft lighting to show of the natural
environment and the elements

- Emphasis on fashion (alternative street style)
- Simple yet bold eye makeup
- Focus colours
- ‘Avant garde’ accessories eg. Hat, earring, shoes, etc.

- In an rural/urban environment to build a lively mood
- A combination of naturalistic and abstract locations in
order to relate to the sub-genre

- Slight unsteady movement of camera
- Shots of environment interlinked to capture atmosphere
surrounding the characters

- Close ups
- Mid shots
- Long shots
- Wide shots

- Limited use of props to avoid distraction from the
narrative/performance/concept
– Discreet props are used when necessary to match
storyline eg. Makeup, phone, food, etc.
