• To create and build my music campaign I am
researching genre conventions in popular female solo
artists in the pop genre. This will help me have an
understanding of how to construct a successful
campaign around a female solo artist.

3. A R T I S T S
• Beyonce is an American Pop singer songwriter who originally found fame as the lead singer
in the band Destiny’s Child. She is one of the most famous artists in the world. Beyonce’s
overall star image plays around the fact she is a role model for women all around the world,
embracing her sexuality through performance, and her openness towards feminism.
• Rihanna is a Barbadian singer, as well as being an artist she is very well known for her
careers in fashion and business. Rihanna is very well known for recreating her image
throughout her career by re discovering her styles. She is the seventh best selling musician
in the world.
• Arianna is best known for her girly style which has become very iconic over the past few
years, and her wide vocal range which has been compared to artists such as Arianna
GrandeArianna is a very well known female American solo artist and songwriter, before her
musical career she was actually an actress for a Nickelodeon TV show.
• Selena Gomez initially started her career on Disney channel as a childhood actor. She then
pursued a career in singing. She is very well known for her philanthropy and being a good
role model to women around the world being a leading feminist.

All the music videos include the most basic form of editing a
straight cut, this gives a consistent flow to the music videos
making the narrative fairly easy to understand.
In Beyonce and Rihanna’s music video there is use of eye line match within the videos, so the
viewer can see what they see this helps enhance narrative of the videos

In Selena Gomez’s video the main use of editing is dissolve, the two shots over lap one of the
shots fades away and the other becomes clearer. This happens several times in the video.
Ariana Grande’s music
video 7 rings is heavily
edited. It includes alot
of animation and
special effects used in
transition and random
shots in the video.
They give the video
the effect of a video
game in parts (gives
an artificial look).

S C E N E )The overall narrative in these music videos is
very similar. The use of lighting in Rihanna and
Beyonce’s music videos is very natural, this
correlates well it makes the video look more
realistic considering they both follow a
narrative. Facial expressions show both artists
are fed up and have dumped their boyfriends,
this is then enhanced by the boyfriends
disappointed facial expressions. The use of
props such as sports cars, gives the artists an
empowering look as it gives of quite masculine
energy, both men in both videos have no cars.
Therefore the women look more powerful.

All the costumes the artists are wearing in these videos are very simple and basic, giving the viewer
a more relatable connection to the artist. It also keeps the narrative more natural and relatable to
the experiences they are trying to convey.
In these three videos there is a high use of
different sets overall this makes the music video
more exciting or interesting as it conveys variety.

Selena Gomez’s video love to loose you is filmed completely in black and white, this correlates well
with the song as it is quite emotional. The setting for the music video also takes place in one room,
giving the video a more simplistic look. Her body language also implies she is vulnerable or sad.
Ariana Grande’s music video 7 rings has many
people in it, it is also the first video I have
compared with an all female cast. Creating the
effect women are the more powerful gender in
this video. This video is also more feminine
there lots of dancing and the lighting is pink
tones, enhancing the girly aesthetic. The
costumes are also very theatrical which
correlates with the dancing in the video, overall
it is more up beat and happier compared to the
other videos.

• The female solo artists share many similarities within their digi-packs. 4 by Beyonce,
Revival by Selena Gomez, Thank you next by Arianna Grande and Unapologetic by
Rihanna.

13. S I M I L A R I T I E S
• All of the covers share a similar theme of partial
nudity, this is striking to the consumer as its
slightly outrageous. Nudity can add a more
mature nature to the artists star image.
• They are also simple photos, the backgrounds
are fairly plain adding to the idea of star image
making the artist stick out more.
• The natural colour palettes the artists use
embrace a more natural beauty and add this to
their star image.

rebellious image.
• The slightly blueish tint on the very
natural colours on 4 by Beyonce adds
a natural element which enhances
the powerful picture of herself.
