Same throughout, bold colours. Bright/dark colours can be
interpreted as anger or a certain attitude. For example, if I was
to use red, I would use it consistently throughout and also
make sure it stands out. For Tune I want the colours red, black
and white and for RW I want to use the colours green, black
and white.

15-35 year olds (Hartley). The magazine
is going to cover a wide range of music
information on different artists and also
the industry therefore I hope it will
appeal to a wide audience. The magazine
will be a reasonable price so the younger
audiences can afford it.
The magazine will contain its logo on each
page and will have a consistent colour scheme
throughout to establish brand identity.

3. Inspiration slide
XXL is going to be my magazine of inspiration and I am going to base my ideas
and codes and conventions on this popular hip-hop magazine. For example the
colour scheme and layout is something that I may take and use for my
magazine.
5. Chosen Font styles
PixelCaps!
My magazine font styles are inspired by XXL. This is because they are both quite
simple whilst also being big and bold. This is good because they will stand out
on the shelves and therefore customers may be drawn towards them.
Furthermore, this is also good as they are new magazines and may therefore
attract a lot of attention. Below are my two chosen font styles for each
magazine.
In addition, I turned my TUNE logo with in order to go with the red and white
colour scheme and for RW I also changed it white. This is important because it
goes with my green and white colour scheme for my other magazine. I used
these colours as I believe they connote how hip hop culture stands out with the
flashy jewelry and expensive outfits which comes out in some of the music
artists produce.

9. Mood board conclusion
• I chose these images for my mood board as I
think this represents hip hop culture with
expensive jewelry and clothing. This is
important because as hip hop doesn’t mainly
revolve around music and this is also the
message I want to be put across with my
magazine with flashy outfits and jewelry.
10. Target audience for my magazine
Hartley
As my magazines are both going to be hip-hop magazines the target age range will be 15-
35 year olds according to Hartley. My magazines will appeal to both genders, male and
female however primarily male because on my front cover it will feature a male artist for
the ‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer 1980). The hip-hop genre appeals to a wide range
considering it has been around for a long term and there are a lot of old hip-hop artists
such as Snoop Dog therefore he will appeal to the older audience of 35.
Katz
My magazine will aim to allow the audience to ‘personally identify’ (Katz) with the ‘star
appeal’ this could be from the interview where they talk about their family life and music
and this will therefore allow the audience to build a ‘personal relationship’ with the artist
as they may be able to relate to certain situations and comments the artist says.
Maslow
The audience will be ‘survivors’ as they will like the security and routing of knowing that
the magazine will be produced weekly with up to date information surrounding artists
and the music industry.
11. Form and style
Layout
The layout of my magazine will be similar to many of the other magazines.
For example, the front cover will have a main image and the masthead,
headline quote, barcode, puff promotion and cover lines. This is important as
it help to attract customers and to also stand out more.
Colours
In terms of my colour scheme my first magazine will be red and white based
off of XXL magazine. This is important because I think this stands out well in
stores and grabs peoples attention.
In addition, I am only making a slight change with the colour scheme in my
second magazine which is green and white. I kept this relatively simple as I
didn’t want it to be completely different to my first one and I also think the
colours go together well.
12. Inspiration slide
Masthead
As you can see the
masthead has large
font and is bright in
colour. This is good
as it appeals to the
customers.
Main image
The main image on
this is also quite large.
This is good as the
magazine now has
star appeal which is
good for fans of
particular artists.
Furthermore the font
on the front cover is
also important as it is
easy to read and
therefore may stand
out even more.
Coverlines
The cover lines are always
around the main image. In this
case the font is bright red. This
is important as it makes it
stand out and also give an
importance to the words.
Barcode
The barcode is always in the corner of a magazine. Its
use is for it to be scanned and then the store it is in
will have it registered that it has been bought.

Main image
The main image on this is
also quite large. This is
good as the magazine now
has star appeal which is
good for fans of particular
artists. Furthermore the
font on the front cover is
also important as it is easy
to read and therefore may
stand out even more.
Interview
The interview will
normally take the whole
second page of a double
page spread. Its purpose
is to entertain the reader
and also inform them
about their life and
perhaps tell them about
up and coming events
and tours.
Drop capital
The use of drop capital within this double page spread is
the big J. This is important as it coveys energy to the
reader whilst also standing out. Furthermore this can be
used to therefore attract more readers and also there is
star appeal.
Pull quote
The pull quote is important as it conveys a small
section of the interview. It is normally a very
interesting quote which is important as is someone
sees it then they may be drawn into buying it. This
may because they are intrigued to read the rest of
the interview or perhaps because it is one of their
favorite artists. Furthermore, this quote also adds a
sense of mystery to the magazine. This is important
because it also adds depth which is good as it keeps
the reader interested.
24. Conclusion
These are my chosen magazine front covers and DPS’ which include my
hand drawn drafts and my graphic layouts. I chose these two due to the
fact that they represent my magazine of inspiration the most.
Furthermore, I also like the simple layout. This is important as I want my
customers to be able to clearly see what is where on the page if they
are looking which will hopefully draw their attention.
