3. One
This was my first attempt at making a flat tone illustration however it doesn’t quiet fit the brief however, I
decided to include it anyway not only so I could show my progress however also because the work itself
looks fairly nice and I felt like if I didn’t include this. This was my first time using tools on a piece of work
like this which is why it doesn’t quite fit the brief in the sense that it isn’t a flat tone illustration.
4. Three
This is my second attempt at making a photograph into a flat tone illustration and I feel like this one turned
out a lot better than the first attempt at this. There are a lot more flat colours on this piece of work
compared to the first one however I kept the sky detailed in each of these pieces that I did as I felt like the
sky looked more effective being detailed in comparison to the buildings being in detail and the background
being flat. I made sure the details of the buildings were different colours to enhance how flat they looked in
comparison to the sky. I made three variations of this image so that it could show not only my progress but
also the experimentation process.
5. Two
This was my first attempt with text and I plan on making different versions like this but with different images
as the image itself looks fairly boring due to how cramped the car looks in this image. I feel like I could
easily improve on this kind of piece with more practice however for a first attempt this isn’t all bad. When it
comes to making a different image I would try making one with the entire image being flat tones and then
including some text, showing my future experimentation by showing different versions of the piece but with
different layouts.
6. I started out making this piece by using the tool on photoshop called “Colour
Range” So that I could select the sky easily instead of having to precisely go
around everything manually
After this I then made sure that the sky was the only thing that was selected
because the finite details in the buildings were also being chosen if I wasn’t
careful with how high the fuzziness was.
After I had selected the sky I used the tool called the ”Polygonal Lasso Tool”
so that I could go around the small details that were missed as well as
deselecting things that had accidentally been chosen when they weren’t
supposed to be.
7. After finishing the previous I the moved onto choosing a foreground colour to
change the selected areas to. I ended up deciding to choose a bright pink
colour so I could create a large contrast between two colours. I the went
through the options and chose the linear light option so that the pink wasn’t
a flat colour.
From this I then continued on by choosing the colour range tool where I
selected the buildings this time and after this was done I then went around
the details like the streetlamps, deselecting details that I didn’t want
including.
I then choose a light orange colour to use for the buildings so there was a
clear contrast between the two colours.
8. I then went into the photo options and went through the options to see how
the colour would affect the buildings and settled on using the ‘Difference’
option seeing as it made it brighter.
From here, I finished the piece by taking the details in the building and
changing them to a colour of their own so that they stood out as a flat block
of colour atop the buildings. I chose a bright, light green as I felt it would
stand out against the buildings and the background.
