1. Evaluation
Task 1:- In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. FILM TITLE
Similar in comparison to the film
‘Valentine’. It has these
connotations of love and
romance, yet the film is actually
around the theme of girls being
murdered, and so it has this
very paradoxical feel.
I chose the title to be called
Broken Heart because it has many
different connotations. On one
side it can be seen as losing a
lover by either breaking up or
from death, and then another
side of this could be that
someone has been killed and
their heart is now literally broken.
3. SETTING/LOCATION
This brief scene in the
corridor just shows that it
is very dark and old
looking, which begins to
build up the suspense of
this horror along with the
eerie music in the
background.
The restaurant is your typical everyday place.
It is quite casual and is known to be safe from
how busy they usually are. I set the lighting to
have this warm ambiance feel, and used
candles on the tables to create this feel. I also
put in some subtle background noise of a
restaurant and people talking to give the
audience the impression of them being in this
busy place.
4. However, as the scene jumps over to
the two girls meeting outside the
house, we know that she is now
safe, especially as the lighting has
changed again to a warmer tone
which brings in the feeling of
friendship and safety.
When the dark woods appear in
the sequence, it brings a sense of
the girl being alone and therefore
no longer safe. The angle shot
that is looking up at a low angle
gives this hinting of her being
watched on her journey home.
5. The camera changes to a different
moment in time once the girls
have been in the house chatting.
Here they are in the bedroom,
which appears as a typical girly
bedroom from the use of pink
colours and girly objects in the
background. This also brings a
sense of safety and innocence.
Whilst the girls are talking, we get a
sudden change in setting, with this
creepy point of view shot of
someone walking towards the
bedroom, seeing the girls in the
bedroom talking. This dark outside
atmosphere creates this scary
tension and shows that this character
is very mysterious as we don’t know
who it is.
6. The corridor is very simple
and plain, and builds the
suspense of the girl
walking off on her own
seeing as it is very empty
looking and quite cynical
looking from the lighting.
The bathroom suddenly changes to a
much darker lighting, highlighting this
element of the girl being on her own in
the house and she has obviously been
watched throughout the night which
makes the audience very suspicious as
to what will happen next. As the killer
appears, he is not lit up which makes
his lurking in very chilling and scary.
7. GIRLThe girl in the sequence is
displayed as a typical
young lady/teenager.
She is wearing smokey eye
make up with red lips.
In the restaurant, she
wears a dark burgundy
dress, black tights,
black boots, and when
outside, a black fluffy
coat.
In the house, she wears
pink tracksuit bottoms
and a green vest top.
8. BOY
The boy in the restaurant
is very casual.
He wears a patterned top
and trousers, showing he
is very laid back and not
very menacing looking.
9. FRIEND
The friend, Julie, has just been
called out at the last minute.
Therefore I dressed her in simple
tracksuit bottoms and a top and
jacket, showing her being casual
and that she has literally rushed
from her house to see her friend.
10. KILLER
It is hard to see what the killer is wearing
and who they are. We just see a dark
mysterious figure wearing a hoodie.
The hoodie illustrates the idea of the killer
possibly being a young adult seeing as these
are the typical people who would usually
wear a hoodie.
This followed the conventions of a horror
seeing as we couldn’t see the persons face
and so we would want to carry on watching
to find out eventually who it is.
11. PROPS
RESTAURANT:
I made the room appear
exactly how one would
look in real life. Therefore
I added tables with table
cloths, candles, cutlery,
menus and napkins.
As well as this I also had
some extras to look like
there were other people
in the restaurant, as well
as a waiter walking past.
This helped establish where
the scene was.
BEDROOM:
I wanted this to appear like a
typical teenage girl room,
therefore used a lot of the
colour pink, such as the
beanbag, duvet, heart
pillows and hockey stick.
I also had objects in the
background representing a
typical girls room like a
brush, perfume, fluffy
blanket and pictures.
12. CAMERAWORK & EDITING
In the beginning of the sequence, I
straight away used a P.O.V. shot to
watch the girl in the restaurant.
This is very similar to the opening of
Halloween, where we see the action
through the point of view of the
killers eyes.
I did this another time when the
girls were in the house, showing
that she must have been followed
home by this person.
This already builds tension and
mystery.
13. The main focus was on the girl, who we
think would be the main character of
the film. The pace of shots all focus on
her, with close ups of her facial
expression and watching her journey
home. However as we find out at the
end of the opening, she clearly isn’t the
main character, seeing as she is killed
off.
This also happens in Scream, where the
famous actress Drew Barrymore is
used, with the camera focusing purely
on her, yet we find out she is not the
main character of the movie from her
gruesome death.
14. During the bedroom scene, I
used overlapping of the videos,
effectively showing the change
in time during the night. This
expressed how much the girl
talks and that her friend is
beginning to become very
bored.
A very effective section edited is
where I overlapped one main
video with two others, showing
the boredom on the friends
face, yet the constant talking of
the girl.
15. The mirror scare was very well edited together.
I made sure the camera was in exactly the right
position so that you couldn’t see it in the
mirror, as well as the killer behind the girl.
Then at exactly the time the girl ducked down
to wash her hands the killer appeared. Once
the girl sees the killer, I edited to a complete
black out, with a scream coming in at exactly
that point. This makes the audience jump and
draws them in to watch more, seeing as we
don’t know what has happened to the girl.
I also added a sting in music at exactly the
time we see the killer in the mirror, and this
was to build the scare factor, seeing as lots of
movies do the same, like for example in
Halloween again, when the lights are turned
out in the bedroom and there is that
significant sting in music to build the tension.
This also happens in The Ring, when there is
suddenly a movement in the reflection of the
TV which makes the girl turn around and get
more scared.
16. TITLE FONT AND STYLE
BROKEN HEART
The title (as well as smaller
subtitles) was in the font
‘copperplate gothic light.’
I chose this seeing as it is clear, and
looks very chilling seeing as the
letters are so bold.
I use the colour deep red to
connote the different themes of
love and a heart, juxtaposing
with danger, blood and death.
This portrays the theme of horror
very accurately.
17. STORY AND HOW OPENING SETS IT UP
Again, it is similar to scream, from the audience
assuming that the blonde girl is the main
character, but following typical horror movies, she
is actually the first person to get killed off.
The first perspective that was instantly used hints
throughout the opening that this is the killer
watching the girl. By bringing in this point of view
shot from the very beginning, it lets the audience
know that something is going on that is very
mysterious. This is a very conventional dramatic
element and creates this tense effect.
18. GENRE AND HOW OPENING SUGGESTS
THIS
We know it is a horror from the dark settings
used within the opening. Many of the scenes are
outside in the dark by woods, and some are in
dimly lit rooms to create a more suspense
atmosphere.
The music I use is very creepy and unnerving
which makes the audience suspect the genre to
be a horror.
The victim is typical for a horror movie by being a
young, blonde, pretty girl who is now naïve and
upset after her break up.
19. HOW CHARACTERS ARE INTRODUCED
The girl is introduced by the action continuously following her, and
watching the different places she is in, focusing the audiences main
attention onto her.
The stalker/killer is introduced through his perspective on the camera
and watching her in different scenes through a window.
Halloween, again, is similar to this by where we can see the kids eyes in
the opening when a hand bends down to pick up a mask and we see
the clear eye view and that the camera is this persons perspective.
