Digital Techniques. By Katie French N0172883
Introduction. Digital techniques is set up to help us with varies styles of design to help us with future work. Some of the techniques will give us more accurate drawings and designs and could speed the design process up. We will learn these techniques to use in the design project next term.
Photoshop. We had to decide on a play that we would use for inspiration/ design for. I chose the Importance of Being Ernest. In the first session we made a mood board and experimented with different material textures and putting them onto a character to make a costume.
Photoshop. This is my mood board for The Importance of Being Ernest.
Photoshop. This is my costume experiment with different textures. To create this I copied parts of materials on to a template.
Evaluation. I felt that Photoshop helped in the way that we could use different sources and create collages using those materials in a quick and efficient manner. Although iv felt that it helped with my ideas I personally would prefer not to use Photoshop for a mood board, but collect my own source. However using Photoshop would help edit some of my sources to fit with my design. For costume designs I feel that Photoshop would be very helpful as you can experiment with different material looks without having to use material at all. U can also place the desired effect on to a template of a character, so that different costumes designs could be created in a much shorter space of time.
3D Max. Here we experimented with different shapes and objects to start then and made a room from what we had learnt.
Evaluation. I felt that 3D Max was a useful programme to use but I found it difficult to grasp the way it works. I do however find it very useful in experimenting with different shapes and how you can arrange them on a page to create various compositions. I think I would use 3D Max to help with props designs and ideas.
AutoCAD. In AutoCAD we experimented (learning how to accurately measure to scale and create) with lots of different simple shapes, for example: lines, squares and rectangles. We then used different tools rotate, fillet, offset and chaffer the shapes. We then trimmed areas we didn’t need. Once we had learned the basics we had to make a copy to scale of our own floppy disk. >
Evaluation. I really enjoyed working with AutoCAD as I felt that it made technical drawing a lot more accurate than hand and made them very neat on a page. I felt that this would be very useful when coming to a design project as it would guarantee the drawings to be to scale and the right dimensions for the designs, whereas by hand these errors could be made. Once you have put the scale and the dimensions into the programme it will automatically make any drawing to the certified scale or dimension making the drawers job easier and neater. I would definitely consider using AutoCAD again.
Digital Techniques Evaluation. Overall I found that I prefer to design using pen and paper, but I did find that learning how to use these programmes would be very beneficial come the time when I need to use them. I feel that out of all the programmes I would use AutoCAD mostly for the design process.
