Why "mobile first" isn't enough - Developing a better user experienceKevin Powell
"Mobile first," is a concept that serves us well as a design tool, putting constraints on our messaging, layout, etc. But to use "mobile first" as a complete mobile strategy can lead to some dangerous lines of thought.
There's a bigger picture that needs to be seen, and it's what we've always done when developing experiences for the web. We need to put the "Experience First." Then we can think about "mobile", "desktop", "lean-back", and whatever other technologies are released in the next several years. It's not about devices, it's about users and experiences.
Presentation first given at BarCamp Nashville in October of 2011.
A discussion about the benefits of a mobile-first responsive approach to web development, why it is as important for desktop environments as it is for mobile devices and why it is the future of web development.
Along the way we'll dispell some of the myths you have heard about responsive web development, leaving you no excuses to not start your next project thinking mobile-first.
Coming soon to a device near you.

2014 Trends Digest Deck for Digital LeadersIan Crocombe
I summarized all the marketing trends so you didn’t have to!
- Frog Design tech trends 2014
- Most Contagious 2013
- LeWeb Paris December 2013 “The Next 10 Years”
- Journalism, Media and Technology predictions 2014
- eMarketer Key Digital Trends for 2014
- CES 2014 roundup
The last few weeks of 2013 saw a huge number of predictions, trends and lists of priorities for marketing in 2014.
I wanted to understand the digital shifts that are happening, so I digested all these 2014 marketing trends so you didn’t have to!
The big theme I’ve identified for 2014 is going to be “Marketing for a Connected World”, let me know what you think or if you’ve got any comments or questions.
WPP Stream Turkey 2013 - Personal highlightsIan Crocombe
Here are my personal highlights from WPP Stream unconference, which took place October 24-27th 2013, Antalya.
Stream is the annual WPP unconference, hosted by Sir Martin Sorrell & Yossi Vardi. 350 guests met up at a scenic, but basic, hotel for three days of discussions and debate.
There were over one hundred Discussion sessions, Ignite talks (15 slides in 15 seconds), a Dragon’s Den for social good, a gadget show, a tech lab, digital art, cooking, sport, film screenings and lots of conversation.
Data is all around us, which is both a good and bad thing. Good, because we need it. Bad, because there’s simply too much to know where and how to start using it. This is one of several reasons that marketing teams are currently dysfunctional – I’ll reveal the rest in my talk – but it doesn’t have to be this way. Data-Driven Design (3D) is an actionable evidence-based framework that gives marketing teams (marketers, designers, & copywriters) accelerated access to the data they really need, coupled with a process for understanding how to use that data to make informed changes to the digital marketing experiences you’re creating today. In Oli’s talk, you’ll learn how to use The 3D Playbook to narrow four hundred sources of overwhelming data into the five you actually need.

Art harder! Of the importance of visual design in digital. Zélia Sakhi
With the rise of lean and agile design processes, visual design in digital products is suffering a slow and painful death. Fortunately, there’s an afterlife after pixel-pushing. Trashing the clichés of the industry around the designer/developer duo, let’s understand why visual design really still matters. And more importantly, how to make it work in a modern team setting, from a UX, development and art direction perspective.
The reality for companies that are trying to figure out their blogging or content strategy is that there's a lot of content to write beyond just the "buy now" page.

Smartphone, e-readers and tablets have dramatically changed the way we access content and digital services today. Designing the user experience means re-thinking the traditional paradigms in use for the web and considering a broader picture where the experience is pervasive, multi-channel and cross-device.
What is fundamental, is optimizing the user experience by designing the interaction through different contexts, functionality and mobile platforms, simply translating the desktop interface is not enough.
Rethinking the business logic of a service centered around the user, is the first step to designing a complex multi-channel experience.
Combining design methodology with agile development is the next step in bringing a successful product or service to market.

Thanks to popular business publications like Harvard Business Review and Fortune, 'design' has become a hot new trend. Along with serious design agency acquisitions by some of the biggest global consultancies and institutions (Accenture + Fjord / McKinsey + Lunar / Capital One + Adaptive Path / etc) design finally has a seat at the table as companies big and small are starting to see the benefits it can bring to their bottom line.
