Dewel proposed a three-step serial extraction procedure in 1978 to properly align teeth that is still used today. The steps include: 1) Extracting deciduous canines at age 8-9 to make space for incisor alignment; 2) Extracting deciduous first molars at age 9-10 to accelerate first premolar eruption; 3) Extracting first premolars as canines develop beyond half root length to facilitate proper canine eruption and alignment. The goal is to prevent crossbites and misalignment through accelerating tooth development.
