What is a Controversial Topic?
A subject or issue that people tend to have a strong
opinion about
There are typically 2+ strong sides/point of views
EX. Abortion, politics, gay rights, etc.
Employee Monitoring Definition
 Employee monitoring is where employers survey their
employees through various methods
 Goal
Keep employees as productive as possible
 Idea/Logic
Employers believe that employees will work harder and
no get off track is they know they are being monitored
Employers will also discipline employees that are not on
task or productive enough
Why is it Controversial?
Often viewed as a violation of privacy
Devices can be monitored in the employee’s off time
Employees argue they are not at work and should
not legally be able to be monitored
Others argue that it is the employer’s right to
monitor their devices since they own them
Different Types of Employee Monitoring
 Direct Monitoring
 Computers are in an open spaced so it can be easily seen what the employee is doing
 Network Monitoring
 Employers keep track of and look at what is done on devices connected to their network
 Email Monitoring
 Employers have access to employees’ email accounts and can see what they send and
receive
 Software Monitoring
 Employers install a software onto employees’ computers that allows them to monitor and
see what is done on that computer
How to React/Deal with Monitoring
 Know what kind of monitoring your employer uses
 Have a complete understanding of what is allowed and what
is not
 Find out about the level of employee monitoring before
accepting a job to be sure it is an environment you can
handle working in
 If you need to do something not work related on your device,
ask your manager beforehand
Conclusion
 Employee monitoring is used to some degree in many companies
 It is often argued over whether employers should be allowed to see what
employee’s do on their devices
 There are many ways that employees can work with and succeed under employee
monitoring
