This document provides a proposal for a short film called "The Virtuoso." It outlines the plot, which follows a man named Mitch who receives a mysterious letter that leads him to reconsider his formerly criminal past. It then lists the group roles and characters in the film, including descriptions of Mitch, his wife Rachel, the criminal leader Zeus, and Zeus's gang. It also details the planned locations, costumes, soundtrack, and post-production effects for the film.
2. Plot Summary
• Mitch Belgrave and his spouse, Rachel, live in
their house together and lead lives far from the
extraordinary. That is until Mitch receives a
letter in the post with an unusual insignia and
only he seems to understand its significance.
Once he follows the letters instructions, it
unfolds that Mitch’s life used to be rife with
criminality and he is left with the conundrum,
does he rejoin?
3. Group Roles
• These are the roles our group will undertake for
the majority of the production although we will
swap and take turns in each other’s places.
▫
▫
▫
▫
Kieran Shah – Camera operator
Harry Saunders – Boom operator
John Friguglietti – Actor, and props master
Tyrell Batchelor - Actor
4. Characters
• Mitch Belgrave
▫ In the beginning it is unseeming that this man has
anything to hide. He leads a clean job life and
comes home to loving other half who are both well
dressed enough so as to not appear slobbish or
unkempt. As the enigma of the letter appears to
the audience we see this man change and his
ruggedness and anger comes out full flow and very
apparent. Perhaps this man is actually capable of
leading a criminal lifestyle and this question is
posed, why has he changed?
5. Characters
• Rachel
▫ The spouse of Mitch. Her job or general life isn’t
portrayed explicitly except for the subtleness of
the two characters comfortability with each other
that displays their long, loving relationship, also
for the fact that they live together.
6. Characters
• Zeus
▫ The leader of the criminal gang that is trying to
win back Mitch. They appear to have known each
other for a long time with the shared knowledge
on each others pasts, humour, and likes and
dislikes. He displays himself as a man to be feared
through his self confidence.
7. Characters
• Group of Criminals
▫ They have very little dialogue between them, thus,
not having an explicit impact on the narrative but
still perform an importance in bigging up Zeus’
image of someone to be feared. The guns and
continuous serious expressions they hold show
that they, or Zeus, shouldn’t be trifled with.
8. Locations
• House
▫ For this we need the outside and inside of a house
to film Mitch and Rachel’s place they own
together. For ease, it should be a house where
adults live to portray the proper set decoration
that an adult couple would own. This shouldn’t
pose a problem as group member John has offered
his house for availability which a location recce
will decide on its use.
9. Locations
• Field
▫ We need a desolate spot to film the meet up
between Mitch, Zeus, and his gang. As where we
are located there are many large, empty fields this
option seems best as it will still hold connotations
of fear and anxiety due to its remoteness and will
be aesthetically pleasing with the colour of the
grounds.
10. Costumes
• Mitch
▫ Well dressed in a shirt and tie with smart trousers
to depict his success but no blazer to show his
poor integration with society after leaving his
criminal gang because he subtly wants to retain
his defiance of law, whether that be of legality or
social norm.
11. Costumes
• Rachel
▫ She will own casual wear as for the scenes she is in
she isn’t doing anything that requires public
appearance; she is just at home relaxing, being a
homemaker. However, it isn’t so casual so she
appears cluttered.
12. Costumes
• Zeus
▫ He is in similar wear to Mitch to connote
similarities between the two characters in terms of
their personality and past.
13. Costumes
• Group of Criminals
▫ They are in more of a casual wear compared to
Mitch and Zeus to show binary opposites of
hierarchy and importance. The two main
characters are in a shirt and tie, therefore are
important. The criminals are in a coat and
trousers, therefore are unimportant and simply
protective fodder in the eyes of Zeus.
14. Props
• Guns
▫ The criminals will be in ownership of these to
display Zeus’ physical power of Mitch.
• Envelope
▫ This is what sets off the narrative as it upsets the
equilibrium. The insignia on the front which is the
logo for Mitch’s ex-criminal gang is displayed
which is importance for creating mystery; a
convention of the thriller genre.
15. Soundtrack
• We originally wanted to use ‘In the House, in the
Heartbeat – John Murphy’, but unfortunately
due to costs of permission we were unable to.
• Our contingency plan of the royalty free track,
‘Stormdrum Rock - Jack LaVallee’, is still
available as long as we thank the composer in
our production so we shall go down this route.
16. Soundtrack
• We chose this track as the crescendo it builds is
incredibly atmospheric and tense, just the tone
we are trying to set in our production.
• Our target audience’s likes will be met with this
track because of its modern feel and
instrumental rock sounds that are
stereotypically drawn to a younger market
17. Effects
• The effects we will use are
▫ Colour correction
This is done so any lighting issues we may have overseen
can be corrected in post-production.
▫ Colour grading
This is done to create a tone or mood in the tint of the
films colour. For this we shall use a washed out effect
with hints of blue to connote tension and fear.
▫ The inclusion of a title sequence
This adds professionalism and realism to our production
that can add to the overall tone by setting the scene as
slow and atmospheric, done by creating a slow title
sequence.
