Application of information technology in nursing

2. INTRODUCTION
The meaning of information technology is the use of
computer and software to manage the information in
terms of storage, retrieval & transmission of
information.
In order to perform complex function there is required
of information technology department in every
institution, companies & hospitals.

3. Advantage in Nursing
 Helps to store and monitoring of information about patient
care and treatment.
 Easy retrieval of specific information
 Reduce workload.
 Less paper work
 Enhanced decision making.
 Easy Scheduling and personnel management (duty roster).
 Improved quality care , treatment and drug administration.
 Easy statistical calculation

4. Disadvantage:
 Expensive
 Insecurity of personal information
 Sometimes more time consuming.
 More maintenance required
 System failure such as due to electricity
 Chance for deleting of information

 Basic software:
To store and retrieve patient information such as medical
history, assessment, prescription, care plans etc.
 Medical references:
These helps to quick assess for Diagnostic test, Disease,
Disorder, Medical dictionaries etc. that helps to gain right
knowledge for treating the person.

 Drug guide:
It makes nurses to quickly become informed about
what a medication consist, how it works and any
possible side effect.
 Patient tracking:
This kind of software enables a nurse to keep track of
several patient and their personal situation.
e.g. B.P. tracker, INR tracker (prothrombin time),
Diabetes tracker etc.

system that support patient care.
