2. Indian Railway
• Indian Railways is India’s national railway system operated by the ministry of
railways.
• It manages the fourth largest railway network in the world by size, with a
route length of 67368 kilometer.
• In the year ending march 2018, IR carried 8.26 billion passengers and
transported 1.16 billion tonnes of freight.
3. Railway Operations

4. IPO
• IRCTC concluded its Rs. 645- crore intial public offering, will make its stock
market debut.
• IRCTC shall be listed and admitted to dealings on the exchange in the list of
‘B’ Group of securities.
• Subscription between September 30 and October 4 was subscribed 112 times
at a price band of rs. 315-320 per share.
5. Pricing Issues
• The railways announced a two paise/km hike in faires of mail/express non-
AC trains and four paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes.
• The increase in fare will be on tickets bought on or after 1 Jan 2020 and no
excess fare will be charged from passengers who have booked tickets before
1 jan 2020.
6. Price Band
• The price band of the public issue is fixed at rs. 315 to rs. 320 per equity
share.
• The government may look to divest about 15 per cent stake each in both of
these companies by FY20.
• Government looking to garner around rs. 1500 crore through IPOs of
railway companies.
