4. An out-of-the-box idea that perfectly meets people’s needs
may be infeasible or unprofitable for an organization to
implement, and be abandoned on the organization’s shelf.
On the other hand, a play-it-safe idea that’s low-cost or easy
to implement may not truly address people’s needs, and also
be abandoned on the market shelf.
5. OKAY. SO WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
Because I witnessed first-hand in Uganda how important it
was to have business and design working together for social
innovation.
An idea thought up by human-centered designers lacked
consideration for the bank that would implement it, and the
idea was eventually scrapped. The bank, in return, ignored
how design could help change it’s lending-focused culture and
struggled to bring financial inclusion to the marginalized.
6. THAT’S WHY INNOVATION, ESPECIALLY
SOCIAL INNOVATION, NEEDS DESIGN AND
BUSINESS TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
When innovation is informed by both disciplines, a well-
designed solution emerges that not only meets people’s
real needs, but also makes real business sense.
